It may have been Jim Croce who once observed that, with regards to NJ, "if they ever give the world an enema, that's where they'll stick the tube."  I've been to the Garden State several times - never could find the garden for the trash, dilapidated buildings and traffic.

There are actually lots of quaintly nice little burgs tucked away here and there, and once I saw a deer run across the road!

 

But the parts you'll most likely travel are indeed depressing.
