I got a stellar deal on a metal detector and I just was able to try it out. I was out for 30mins in my back yard and had a lot of hits. I found and old fence line, some old nails, a chunk of metal in the shape of a triangle, and a few coins. The only thing worth mentioning was a  1942 Belgium 1 franc. It is not worth anything of value but has an interesting history. This coin was minted by the Germans in WWII during the occupation of Belgium. It is considered an occupation coin in Belgium. I was thinking of taking the beat up 1942 Nagant stock and inlaying it in it, lol. I have only done about 1/10th of my yard and I have found 5 pennies from the 40's and the Belgium coin. I can't wait to get out and find more.

All those broken choppy hits are the old rusty nails and junk.  The good solid sounds are what you want.  One other thing an old pull tab is your worst enemy, they hit just like a real find would. Good luck!

Ive been seriously thinking about getting into this hobby while the gun market settles down. Ive got a bunch of different places i could search, for instance my families 70 acres. That would keep me busy for awhile lol

I got a decent metal detector but no place to try it out, though I may have one or 2 places I can try

if i buy one it will probably be a garrett ace 250. Those seem to be one of the better entry level detectors from the little bit of research ive done on it

I had my roof replaced about 2 years ago, and the contractor did a poor job picking up nails.  So I use one of those 40% off coupons from Hobby Lobby, and purchased a metal detector.  I figured the avoidance of flat tires on the mower and kids with nails in the feet was worth the price I paid.  I have taken it to the local school playground, and I am up some $0.64 in finds.

I got mine from academy, I was sent a 20% off coupon in the mail. It did not work on ammo or guns so I went in looking for shoes. When I was checking out I glanced over at the metal detectors and saw that they had put some on clearance. This metal detector was 49.99 marked down from 179.99 so I used the 20% off on the metal detector and paid the sale price of 29.99 for my shoes. I paid $40 for the metal detector and I feel that I have already made my money back just in entertainment. The value of what I found is probably less than $1 but I had fun learning how to use it.

I bought one a couple years ago. I was going back and forth between the garrett 250 and a fisher f2. The 250 has more user newb friendly options, but they told me after you use it for a while, you won't even use them. The F2 also gets a little deeper.

So far, I have found a hammer, cheap knife, and some change. I have only been able to get into city parks....

Happy Hunting Lionsfan! That franc sounds cool. I'be always been more interested in the history than money. I hope you find plenty of that too though!

I bought one several years ago.  I got a Whites, don't recall the model number.  It has been great.  I'm pretty sure it paid for itself after a couple of trips to campgrounds and parks.  Almost always find coins by swings and benches.

At one campground I left with $75.00 in coins - more than paid for fees for the camping :)

Still waiting for the day I find a ring that's actually worth something
