Whew  if you like these types of spiders come take all that you can carry from my house. I have black widows, brown widows, and a healthy infestation of the brown recluse....  Last summer I was killing 90+ a month. I have only located/killed only one or two female brown recluse's out of all of the ones that I have killed.

 

I did have a black widow and BR in the same jar for a week or two. The BR won

Pain, yea that was the conclusion that I came to after reading through all of the regs I could find.

There are some federal restrictions w/regards to shipping them through the postal service but other than that no-one seems to care enough to pass legislation forbidding someone from catching & keeping a spider in a jar.

I freakinv hate spiders. Im not afraid of them, but if I find one in thouse that suckers dead. My wife is phobic of them, if she saw a black widow that size she would burn the house down and not blink lol.

I don't believe arachnids fall into the catagory of wildlife. I'm sure of it.

Anyway you guys should see the size of some of the wolf spiders we get around here, seriously no exageration the leg span on them is a good 6" on average.
Thankfully my dog loves playing with them, he doesn't seem to get bitten or if he does he doesn't seem to mind it much, otherwise I have to hunt them down & toss them back outside, which sucks because they can move so fast.

I've seen one of these big bastards once. No exaggeration I grabbed the handiest weapon at hand which happened to be a 2x4 with a nail in the end and started swinging. Landed a solid hit with the nail and I'm pretty sure I heard that spider chuckle and saw him shoot me the bird as he scuttled off. Creepy.

I guess you can put me in the category of weird people who find spiders absolutely fascinating. I advocate "catch & release" for all species except Brown Recluse.

I put recluse spiders in the same category as cockroaches. I don't have a problem with Widows though. However, my favorites are the big, highly beneficial black/yellow garden spiders-- some of the most amazing structural engineers in nature's realm.

 

Yeah, not really a spider fan either. But like you say, the big garden speiders are amazing. 

 

We would see one in almost every window, running a web out to the rose bushes or whatever they could attach to. Wish I'd taken some pictures of the webs they engineered around the house.

 

They were just awesome constructs. And the flies and mosquitoes got caught in them too. And that was a big plus for me.

 

We had a lot, and I mean a lot of them here with us until the 2010 floods. Guess the waters either washed them away, or perhaps all the crud that came in with the foul waters might have killed them off.

I used to live in a split level and the windows to the den were on the front porch (we never used).  I noticed a big dark spot behind the curtains (we never opened) and had to investigate.  I pulled the curtain back and was looking eyeball level at a basketball sized hornets nest built right onto the center of the glass of the window.  Beat all I'd ever seen. It was a perfect half of a hornets nest, shape and all. You could actually sit and watch the buggers crawling into and out of the opening in the bottom.  You could also see them crawling all around in the tunnels of the nest.  I watched them for a week or so, then got nervous that someone might walk up on the front porch to the door that was only about 8 feet away from the nest.  I bought a couple of cans of hornet spray, waiting until about 11pm on a Friday night and sprayed the crap out of it with a complete can and went to bed.  Next day there was a pile of hornets about 6" deep. I sprayed it with a water hose until it fell to pieces and cleaned the window.  I would have thought I got them all, but every now an then for several days, we'd see a few circling the area where the nest was.  Never saw them again though.

 

Edited to say I took a bunch of pictures of the thing and I'll try to find some and post them.  Pretty interesting really....

 

I seen that very same thing at a girlfriends house back in the 70's. It was like the nest was split right in two, could watch the little bastards tending the hive.

 

As far as the widow is concerned, if they aren't in a common use area, I tend to leave them alone, but them Recluse are bad mojo and I kill 'em every chance I get. I got tagged slipping my britches on one morning and it was a terrible mess for several days after. If you spot a BW, it will likely be in the same place week after week doing whatever they do, those Recluse roam all over and get in to awkward places and they will bite you in even more awkward spots.

Spiders give me the heebie jeebies bad. Even those pictures creep me out a little, lol. (nice photography though!)

 

It's my own personal war... me vs. any spider I see. :)

Im not a lawyer but law aside it cant be hard to hide a spider or lose it in a boating accident if someone asks. Im sure they would more than likley ask about your guns first. Then use the illegal pet as a reason to take the guns.

Nice catch by the way. I was in Baptist Desoto a couple of weeks ago and a patient of theirs (not mine so no HIPAA violation) was bit by a copperhead. He caught it alive and everyone was going in to have a look. I offered my partner a quarter if he tried to pet it, I saved that money.

It don't matter, snakes are protected in this state, but folks seem to go out of their way to mame, maul and kill them. I have Pythons and Corn snakes for pets. I guess a spider would be OK. I don't know how the state would look at a BW Spider as a pet, since keeping poisonous snakes is a NO NO.

I "shot" one with a 12 GA.

Hunting, walking in the woods, turned and was face to face with what looked like a GIANT.

Reaction, raise barrel and pull trigger.

Phantom, agreed I am a big "wild life" enthousiast anyway, I've kept and raised all sorts of various animals, fish, reptiles, insects, etc over the years & I just enjoy watching them.

Rusty, meh I've never been squimish around critters, as a small child I lived in New Mexico & I used to catch the little scorpions that were everywhere there & would keep them in coffee cans, you just have to be careful not to get careless with them.

Spiders are generally one of those critters that most folks just seem to love to hate, not sure why but they don't bother me as much as say hornets, I freaking hate hornets, especially the ones that make their nests under the ground & then you run a mower over a big nest of them & the sumbitches come out in droves, mad as hell, stinging you all of the way back to the house & then you have to wait til dark, pour 10 gallons of gasoline on the sumbitches to kill the nest off ... yea not a big fan of hornets.

 

 

I went over a yellow jackets nest once with a mower and actually didn't have them come out. I did quit mowing and wait for the evening to gas them and stuff the hole closed.

I own an adult corn snake as a pet but don't like spiders. I used to kill rattlesnakes until I became a snake owner.

I found a little baby rattle snake the 2nd day after moving into this house, it was sitting on top one of the boxes I had put in the storage room.

Thankfully I had the airconditioner running full blast for those 2 days & it was cold and slow, thus easy to catch, didn't really want to test out the local ER on my 2nd day down here.

Those baby rattle snakes haven't learned how much venom to inject, so they are especially dangerous, I have no idea how he could have gotten in there but he was apparently attracted to the smell of the fish food in the box he was sitting on top of.

I dont care if they are protected.. if they shit gold threats or if they cure AIDS... I am not going to  let a spider go.. those things are not from this earth. But I dont go out of my way  to kill them either..

One year we had a bumper crop of Black Widows around the house.. that was weird.

They belong somewhere else.. not in/around/under or in between my house. 

 

We had a Tarantula while we where station in New Mexico.. they are neat to watch when they catch their supper but .. ewwhhh.. just ewwwhhh.. not anymore.

 

I like snakes.. and I make sure if there is one  going across the street that I avoid it.Same goes for turtles and such.. I love animals

I can let a spider go depending on where I see it but I get really scheeved out by the giant cockroaches around my house. I mean almost as big as a .50BMG

Jeesh! If I had cockroaches around here that big I'd probably get a lot of trigger time with my airguns in! Hahhhahhhaaaa roaches don't get relocated, they get squished!
