Has anyone pressed their own receivers on dies? AK or similar?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone had made anything by using dies and a press to build a receiver or similar.  The reason I ask is just because I was wondering how they do the stamping and anything related.  If you have any links that would be greatly appreciated.

with Ak flats and a bending jig it's pretty much no way to screw up. Have read about some HK flats and jigs for G3, but have never done one.

check out the AK files and you'll get an eye full.

If you have the ability; machine one out of billet. Or buy a raw forging and build an AR.

I would like to do that next, the problem is I don't have a mill.  I'm considering saving my gun money though over the summer and buying a mill. Choices, choices.  Already have some money saved in a coffee can that I saved this week. :)

I have thought about this as well. I am currently trying to get a mill set up to do some 80% ar15 lowers from tactical machining with their jig. The ak build may be my next project. I just need to figure out the heat treat part of that deal.

It woukd be alot easier and cheaper to just buy one but I like the diy route for custom engravings and such which are impossible to find. Like my first ar lower is a custom engraved one I will sbr and its serial number is my dob. Some may not get it but I feel its a personal accomplishment

Oh it it purely for a personal accomplishment deal, not a money saving one.

how are you going about heat treating the ak receivers? I don't mind plug welding over spot welding as I don't care about that minor visual detail but the heat treating is my concern

I weld my rails on the inside before I bend it . It just leaves a cleaner look. I did have to modify my die so that it would clear the installed rails.

I heat treat mine with a torch and oil . There are several links that show how. It is the part that I hate to do but I just take my time and follow the process best I can. It is a pain having to clean it up between each hole you treat. I normally take brake cleaner and spray the oil off it after it cools.
