It's Time To Stop Talking and Start Doing

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if this is the most appropriate place for this thread so if one of the Admins feel it should be moved please do so!

Fellow TGO members;

Many of us here spend a lot of time on this and other forums talking about how important the right to keep and bear arms is to us, to our country, to our liberty. Ronald Reagan once said “freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction”

I know of nothing more important to freedom than the right to keep and bear arms...like "freedom", understanding why that right is so important must also be passed to the generations behind us or it will be gone…well; it’s time to stop talking and start doing.

I believe that our education system from kindergarten to graduate school is doing its best to teach our children that “guns are bad”. I believe, and I think we all know that there is a concerted effort in this country to totally ban civilian ownership of guns (all their protestations to the contrary notwithstanding).  I don’t have any children to pass my appreciation of or my understanding of the importance of arms to.  I’ve done my best to help my niece and nephew but I want to do more.

Maybe some of you will join me; in fact, I can’t do this by myself.

My idea is simple, identify families who, except for lack of funds, want to pass a love, respect and appreciation of firearms to their children then provide them with the money to buy a Cricket 22 rifle along with some ammunition. As you can see from this thread  http://www.tngunowners.com/forums/topic/65070-left-attacks-crickett-as-child-porn-etc/ there are already some willing to help but there is more to consider.

First, I’m unsure how to identify a family who really need this help.  Second, is there any legal liability we need to worry about/need to take steps to avoid?  I’m not afraid of being sued but I also don’t want to make it easy for anyone to do so either. J

So…I’m asking for your help; whether you are willing to contribute $$$ or legal advice or help with identifying a need…if someone reading this is in the situation where they would like this help for their child then feel free to contact me by PM; you have my word that I will never release your name as a recipient without your permission.

Join your local rifle range.

Vote to PURCHASE ten to twenty Cricket rifles, ammo and a couple of high quality safes.

Organize a group of existing instructors.

Set up a curriculum with regards to safety, range rules and finally marksmanship.

Sell the "free" (actually endowed) program to scouts, church groups, youth groups.

All kids that participate that get the bug WILL find a way to earn their own.

I feel that this is an honorable idea, but the liabilities are through the roof without some type of organization and legaleze.  Just my opinion and I could be wrong.  If everything gets worked out legal wise, I'm in for a healthy contribution.

I like the idea.  Hopefully a lawyer will chime in with some tips.  Maybe setting up a Non-Profit would be a good way to go to insulate the helpers from the helped.

Count me in for whatever.  I can help with ammo, a rifle, legal fees or even with admin help (training, coordination, etc).

That being said, there is going to have to be some kind of structure in place to make this thing legit so nobody gets screwed.  Some kind of plan.

As to earning the rifle.  Maybe make it so that once a child completes certain tasks that he can keep the rifle.  Like in Scouts if they get certain merit badges then they can keep the rifle.

Good ideas like these have a way of disappearing due to a lack of organization, if you or someone can get a handle on this then I'm with you.

Edit:  If this does get off the ground and you want a website to explain the program, let me know, I can help with that too.

Perhaps and I'll probably seek the advice of John Harris (TFA) before pulling the trigger (pun intended) on this.

One thought I've had is that if volunteers simply supply the funds and some ammo and let one of the parents do the actual purchase our liability would be limited...I don't know...this day and age who can tell?

If there are a lot of liabilities then I may just have to do this completely on my own and that's okay...I'm not afraid of a lawsuit and in fact, I love the courtroom...it's cheep entertainment to just go and watch a trial not and then on a day off.  I also would love to see the media coverage for such a trial. ;)

I'm in. My concern would be that a family that can't afford a $109 rifle might consider selling that rifle down the road if things get tough. I dont think we can "loan" the rifle, so that is a risk worth taking. There needs to be some kind of education and contract signed by the parent that they will store the riffle locked and out of reach. This awesome idea could quickly become tragic if the parents make a mistake. I have a bag of cable locks. Not sure if they will fit the Crickett.
