What was that semi auto import that had the fake suppressor they allowed, then later decided it actually was a suppressor and the company had to send out a free replacement?

Yep, thanks, that's the one:

"Fake Suppressor Reclassified

In January 2010, in the United States; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives ruled that the previously approved barrel shroud included with the GSG 5 SD to give the cosmetic appearance of a real suppressor (or "silencer") is a true suppressor, despite it being physically incapable of functioning as a suppressor, and therefore is regulated under the National Firearms Act. ATI, Inc. instituted a recall of the item."

If you've ever looked at the older models the shroud had nothing separating the inside of the shroud and the barrel. If one were inclined to "port the barrel" it would make it a Functioning suppressor. The later models are designed differently so that one couldn't just drill holes in the barrel and make a suppressor. The ruling Sounds dumb and actually doesn't even makes sense. It's a suppressor even though it doesn't work as one? Edited by orientalexpress

Well, that's just the Wiki writer's take, I don't know what the actual exact ATF wording was.

wouldn't take much to loosen the velcro and shoulder it... wish they would just remove SBR, SBS, full auto and suppressors from the NFA

Or just take the wait time and extended back ground checks out for SBR SBS and Suppressors. If it's about the money just let you make an appointment at the local IRS office and give them cash and get your tax form stamped.  The whole idea of an extended background check baffles me since you already had to pass a check to get the lower or shotgun to start with.

Ah, gotcha.

Well, companies have been burned in the past by ATF changing its mind, so certainly there's some risk. What was that semi auto import that had the fake suppressor they allowed, then later decided it actually was a suppressor and the company had to send out a free replacement?

it was the ATI GSG-5SD orginal with the HK sites they got sued for... I had one and traded it shortly after that ruling came out... i don't see how it was considered a silencer... it was a barrel shroud
