I'm not going to risk leaving my AR in my vehicle to be stolen. I have a fantastic hiding spot for my Glock which I doubt anyone would find and I bring it inside with me when I get home from work.

I don't think that there is a one size fits all truck gun, it just depends on what you are likely to encounter.  These days living in the suburbs but working in remote mountain areas I might carry a 30/30 or a 12 GA slug gun to work with me but it's coming in the house at night and will not be left in the car.  There have been times that I have kept a deer rifle in the truck at all times, but back in those days I was doing a lot of hunting and had permission to shoot deer in a lot of places around our community.  Other times a .22 rifle has filled the need just fine, it just depends on what you need to do.  A M44 Mosin might be great for some while others prefer a .22 or an AK-47 for the same job.  Of course my long gun is always carried in addition to my Glock or my Kimber.

I live in a very rural town, and rarely venture to larger citys like knoxville so break ins are a small concern. This will change from person to person and area to area. I do everything I can to mitigate break ins, and drive an older beat up pick up truck with no gear visible and nothing enticing like sound equipment. Its a risk I'm willing to take to ensure I have a long gun in case of a shtf situation and I need to get home. Plus I live on a large farm, and also travel to my parents farm alot. My truck gun has been pressed into service more than once to get rid of a coyote harassing live stock, something that would be almost impossible with a handgun, or even a shotgun. My firearms do enter and exit the truck with me when I'm home. I dont leave them overnight

I switch out between an old 870 and a beater Winchester 94 (post-64 with a little rust) in 30/30 depending on my mood. I figure either of those two will always work, have plenty of power, don't take up too much space and and I'm not out more than a couple hundred bucks if something happens to one of them. I always have my carry gun with me too.

Nope, righty but the holster is a lefty and it works perfectly for my right hand draw, as far as the angle it can be adjusted it is a Black Hawk QD

Pass on the shotgun. If you end up having to hump it all the way home, shotguns are too limiting. Bulky, heavy ammo and limited range.
I'll take a rifle any day.

In my personal truck it's a .357 on me and sub2k in pack behind the seat.  If I'm in my work truck I have my issue Glock 22 and sub2k (takes Glock 22 clips) and a Rem.870 in the box. In my wifes ride, just the .357.

The first thing I thought when I discovered the Sub2k was "TRUCK GUN!!!"

 

Curious, what pack do keep it in? I know there's a factory zippered case, but I'm betting you've got something cooler than that?

 

It's just too much of a complement to a carry piece, like a G27, to not take advantage of one!

 

 

Now, I just need to find one for sale without having to take a 2nd mortgage...

I have a maxpedition 3 day pack.  First aid kit, change of cloths, water, shelter, poncho, food, and a bunch of little things plus the sub and 1 30rnd, 1 22rnd. 3 15rnd and 1 10rnd clips.

For just general purpose use, as much as I try to shake the idea, I keep coming back to the thought that one of those Rossi matched pairs in .410/.22LR would make a good 'truck gun'.

 

Even in the unlikely (but possible) event that I need to use it as a 'get home' gun, the need to fight off the Mongol hoardes is not a huge consideration, for me.  Beyond that, such a combo would likely take care of anything that walks, crawls or flies in East Tennessee, excepting black bears and elk, which really aren't high on the list of concerns.

 

As a break action, single shot gun (with interchangeable barrels), it would keep the manual of arms simple and probably cut down on the potential for mechanical failure.  Both good features in a 'truck gun', I believe.

 

In the youth configuration, these things are quite small and, I am guessing, very light.  Broken down, they should easily stow in a backpack.  .22 ammo is small and light.  As shotgun shells go, .410 shells are relatively small and light, too, while still giving the ability to choose slugs or shot shells. It would not be a great choice for a fighting gun but for a knock around/general use/short term survival gun it should work pretty well.  Also, as some others have said I wouldn't want something expensive for a 'truck gun'.  At $169 or so brand new (Walmart price) it wouldn't break the bank, either.

Maybe a dumb question, but how much water, and in what containers?

For me its my Remington 870 18" barrel, loaded with buckshot, and some slugs in the speedfeed stock. I can maneuver it in the cab of my truck.
