Here's my stupid AR question.

I've been a SKS and AK person for a very long time and picked up a Bushmaster Carbon 15 a couple months ago, I love the rifle but before I start cleaning it after shooting it today again, how do I manually hold the bolt open on it for a quick inspection without using a empty mag?

I'm sure there has to be a better way I'm just missing it.

Pull the bolt back and push the only button on the left side of the gun.

But if you are cleaning it, you should just pull the bolt out, instead of just holding it back.

Old habit, I like to lock them back and take a good look at internals and physically look for a round in the chamber and not just trust that the extractor did it's job before I break a rifle down to clean it. And holding it against the spring while checking is risking slam fire if you let go.

I had a extractor fail once on on a sks on last round and didn't know it had a round in till I went to clean, thankfully it was a fired one. Edited April 27, 2013 by Tobashadow

Keep in mind if locked back without a mag it trips kind of easy and could surprise ya.

Trust me it's a no finger situation lol, I just like being able to look from multiple angles without holding the charging handle.

I think he meant the bolt releases kinda easy, lock the bolt rearward and tap the butt on the ground, it'll release pretty easily (usually). You would probably be better off just leaving the bolt forward and just popping the rear takedown pin and breaking open the rifle. Then you can safely remove the bolt and look straight down the barrel.

This way there are no concerns with spring tension and the hammer is not a factor. Edited April 28, 2013 by Romad7

yeah, it's not like it is an M-1 Garand   :up:

 

I usually just punch the pin and pull the bolt on the AR  easier to check the whole length of the spiral tube

just as a safety suggestion. I would really recommend knowing basic function of any firearm before taking it out to shoot.
