LAPD chief Charlie Beck called the incident a "tragic misinterpretation" by officers working under a high level of stress. He personally apologized to the mother and daughter a few days after the shooting and launched an investigation into the officers' conduct, which is ongoing.

Results of the investigation are as follows: 1) lapd officers are color blind 2) lapd officers can't differentiate makes or models of vehicles and 3) lapd officers need more target practice

BS, in my opinion. They should have taken them to court in order to show fault and there should be a criminal trial for the cops that did this. Sorry, but under no circumstances ever, ever is what they did excusable. These cops have no business having a badge. But hey, at least they gots their money.

I have a slightly different take. On the surface yea, you would think the victims deserve a boat load of money for the incompatence of the PD,

 

The PD has no money, L.A. has no money, their income is generated by taxes, those that force themselves to get out of bed at a certain time daily and labor for a living to provide for themselves and their families. As a general population, how much taxes y'all think the tens of thousands of LA gang-bangers pay, welfare recipients, illegals, renters, etc.?

 

As a law abiding, working / productive citizen who owns a home / property / business, why should I be penalized and my ability to provide for me and my family diminished with more excessive taxes to cover those that bear little of the their responsibility. Poor choices bear personal responsibility and should not be assumed by a collective social society as punishment for errs / stupidity of others. 

 

IMHO, those responsible for gross errors in judgement and actions bear total personal responsibility and should be held individually criminally and financially responsible until the adjudicated judgement is satisfied.

 

But hey, I'm left-handed and I'm told I think in my right mind :ugh:

I sort of agree, but that opens a can of worms for the officer that does everything as best he can, still messes it up, and then gets sued for trying to do the job.   It even opens a can of worms for suing officers that did not even mess it up, just for arresting someone, it would happen.  

 

Also, its partly the fault of the LAPD here.   They trained these officers, right?  They gave them their orders as well, right?  And they get to decide if they fire them or not?

 

--- It comes down to: those officers were on a shoot to kill mission as ordered by their superiors.   They wanted him dead.  I fully believe they were ordered to shoot on sight and THAT is the SOURCE of this incident. 

 

So, should the LAPD foot the bill?  At least in part.  Should the officers be prosecuted for gross negligence?  Yes.  Should there be an investigation into their orders? yes.  Should the individuals have to pay some of the bill? Probably -- but not practically, its a good idea in this instance but a bad idea "in general".

While I am kind of against the tax payers paying up, there is no way an officer's, or even 2-3 officer's, salaries would be able to ever pay me enough for being shot in the back with exit wounds on the chest. 4.2 million is excessive? No. Life time medical on that is, best case, going to be in the 500k range. Heck I wouldn't be surprised if just the emergency medical topped 200k. The other 3 mill, Seems about right, with a basic standard of living that should last a lifetime with a little left over for the kids. Really pinch it and leave a nice chunk for them. Me personally though, I would want much, much more. That is a horrific thing to go through.

A judgment against a person as an individual is useless 99% of the time.  The victims would be left without compensation.

I think the offending officers should be lined up and the ladies allowed to shoot them back. Turn about is fair play, no?
