I've used Slide-Glide too. I've come to view it an mostly an intermediate step. First clean, then Slide-Glide, then lubricate with oils and grease if not used in a couple of days.

But Slide-Glide is really good if you plan to swim with your handgun.

WD is good for noisy hinges.I use oil of various makes for actual lubrication.

I had to go swimming with my 649 Smith a few weeks back, WD-40 was used to blow thw water out of it once I was back at home. Then the gun was dried and properly (lightly) lubed with CLP. No rust no fuss, I don't generally swim with guns, but when your raft is stuck on rocks you gotta get out of the boat.:D

WTF?,Sounds like somebody has been watching Deliverence.

If seeing Deliverence makes you leave your gun at home I ain't going rafting with you! ( When I take my kids to the wilderness I would be not be doing my job as protector to go unarmed)

Probably the one thing that you all agreed on was that WD-40 is a penetrant but what has not been mentioned is WHERE it will penetrate and thus this warning.

Do not use WD-40 on any weapon with a scope. The WD-40 will penetrate the seals and your nitrogen gas will then purge! The scope will then fog from the inside and is toast.

Seen it happen, was not my scope but I learned the lesson. I use Lucas Gun Oil and Kroil after cleaning with Gun Scrubber and/or Barnes CR-10 or Sweets for copper fouling.

I always use gun scrubber followed up by break free clp. I would rather use the stuff thats made for guns on my investments

I've used wd-40 for years and never had a problem. but to stand corrected. It isn't designed for lube. I have never liked rem oil or most lubes. but a few years back i got a bottle of tri-flow to lube a paintball gun. i now lube my guns with it and use the wd-40 and carb cleaner for the cleaning.

The reason people think that wd-40 is bad for stocks is the fact that after a few years the wood will soak it up and makes refinishing a stock a pain. the only thing i hate to deal with worse on wood is sweat stains.

So far, the concensus here seems to be that it isn't harmful, but akin to miking a cat...useless.

Now, that is well said!:D
