Looking for IDPA, USPSA or similar events relatively near Gatlinburg

Hi,

I'm from Michigan, and I'm new to the site. This is my first real post, and I'll be in the Gatlinburg area from May 6-11

and I'm looking for IDPA, USPSA matches, practice matches or similar action pistol events that are relatively nearby. I have found a couple of indoor ranges, but I hate to come to such a beautiful place and spend my time shooting indoors. I would also like to know if anyone can recommend a nice outdoor range that is open to the public? I have all my own equipment so I don't specifically need a place that has rental gear. Thanks for any help you can offer.

you missed it by a couple of days.

ORSA--Oak Ridge Sportsmans Assoc has IDPA the 1st SAT of each month, so if you could be in town on May 4. . .Also, they have USPSA on the 3rd SAT.

ORSA is about 45min~1hr from Gatlinburg.

not sure of other facilities up near that area.

otherwise check out this sticky:

Yeah I saw that as I was searching the IDPA website, I may try to make it but I'm traveling with some family

members who aren't shooters so it's iffy. Thanks for the other link as well.

Here's an outdoor facility in Knoxville that you may also consider.

Enjoy.

I thank you for the link, and I will certainly consider it. I may also try to shoot in Asheville NC on the way home

too, because I cannot seem to find any action pistol shoots that I can get into that are relatively close to Gatlinburg. I really want to shoot an IDPA or

USPSA match or practice match or other any action pistol shoots, but as I said above, I will only be in Gatlinburg from May 5-11.

There is one in Gallatin on may 11th, but it is 3 hours away and starts at 9AM, and the one in Asheville that starts about 1:30 or so.

I'll have to play it by ear. Thanks to everyone who offered any suggestions, and if anyone else has any please feel free to reply as well.

Hey Glock26,

thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I got the shaft from them today. I looked at their site and verified the hours prior to leaving to go shoot there.

However, after driving 50 miles to get there, there was a sign at the gate announcing that they are closed on Wednesday for National guard training

which was not noted on their site, or on their recorded message. I should have known better than to go anywhere that is run by any form of government.

I will have to be satisfied only shooting indoors at the Sevier indoor range, this is in no way knocking their establishment, which I've been told by many is

an excellent facility with a great staff. It is more a statement of my dissapointment at having to only shoot indoors in such a beautiful state. I wanted to shoot at both places since I am actually leaving on Friday morning and will not be able to make it to an action pistol type shoot on Saturday. Although It didn't work out well for me, I appreciate the gesture on your part.

IMO you didn't miss anything.  All shooting has to be done while sitting down.  No rapid fire.......whatever that means to the RSO.

Boy I apologize. I've only shot there a few time (shotgun) and that was a few years ago. I guess one really needs to call and verify if possible. That's a real bummer. I hope they didn't blame that on the "Sequester"  :usa:
