Shots Exchanged At Watts Bar Nuclear Plant

Don't they have a patrol boat? You would think they would.

I'm sure they do, but think about practicality of going from being shot at in a land vehicle, to returning fire, then getting in said patrol boat, starting it and then pursing them.  Logistically it would have been futile, they never would have caught them.

or if the boat is on patrol, getting them from their current location to the shooting location.  Then what do you do, pursue  every boat on the water?  Contrary to popular belief there are a lot of boats on the water at night, especially during warm weather

That's why they need one of these!

The dude was practically lobbing bullets from the boat ramp. Then took off in his boat. What did you want them to do, swim after them?

That's funny right there! :)

Shooting at someone kinda makes for a bad recon don't it?I'm going with poacher although recon or a drug deal sounds a lot more exciting.

Actualy, "Recon by Fire" is a military technique. Heck who knows...

We will probably never know it's still fun to speculate though. Could have been one of those deals where they hired a contractor to test the security.. Richard Marcinko style

I vote for organized crime drug deals.

It is not very convenient to drive up I-75,  would make much more sense to do a drug deal on the Clinch River in the middle of the night.

You know looking at google earth of Watts Bar, if they shot from the boat ramp which is across the river, how they call out?  This does not make any sense.  Go see for your self, the boat ramp is across the river from the cooling towers.

This shot shows their orientation across from one another in the lake.

You don't "test" security by having live rounds fired back at you.  That's called suicide.  What if the security officer hits you in the head with his live rounds?  Wouldn't that be an epic failure of the test on your part?

[1] There is no way you could hear someone yelling from the boat ramp across the river

[2] If I remember the news artical it said the shots came from the south side of the nuclear plant which is wooded. The picture in the newspaper article is more from a southern point. {From the main gate}

[3] The boat ramp on Rhea County side, looks more like they dumped excess concret out there

[4] It would take about an hour to get a boat into the water

I still think someone was poaching and the shot went wild or the story the security guard is telling is pretty hinky...... But who knows, there was a group of ninja retirees hike a couple miles over some rough terrian to cut through fences, get past security guards & ground motion sensors to get into what should have one of the most secure sites in the world

Actually one of the most effective ways of determining security at a sight is by using a small probing attack.  That said i dont think thats what this was.  Also for sensitive site security they are less concerned about catching anyone thier purpose is to deter and stop attacks.  Thats why you do not chase after people or divert security from other areas untill you are sure that the security element that is being engaged is uncapable of detering the threat without additional resources its a balancing act where you cant wait to long but you have to wait long enough to have an understanding of what the threat is.  The last thing in the world that they want is to send the majority of thier response force to one area and find out that it was a distraction with a main attack force comming from a different area.
