Beer on Sundays

This is going to sound like complaining, because it is, but could someone remind me what the purpose of this law is? What are we accomplishing by making it illegal to sell beer on Sunday?

Since I have multiple young children, one of them still in diapers, leaving the house is an operation one has to backwards plan for at least a half hour before leaving. It is not as simple as hopping in the truck and heading down to the stop and rob. I was realizing this last night as I made plans to do yard work today. I like to have a couple beers during the course of my yard work, however I do not have any beers in the house. I thought of heading out last night to grab some, but it was already late and I had about a million things that needed to happen to get the kids to bed. By the time I was able to settle down it was 8:30 PM, which, in my world, is far too late to be out.

I knew I'd have to hit up the gas station in the morning to get fuel for the mower and I thought about how convenient it would be if I could go inside and just get a 12 pack, but since it would be Sunday I'd be screwed. Maybe this is poor planning on my part by not getting beer the last time I went grocery shopping, but I shouldn't have to plan days in advance to purchase something due to a law that shouldn't exist in the first place. I have a hard time believing that the majority of Tennesseans agree this law should exist, so why does it? There is no law against drinking on Sunday, so what's to keep a person who plans better from drinking the beer he purchased on Friday? What is this law preventing other than my contentment?

It prevents the prudish southern baptists from voting for someone else. And of course it is in place to protect the children.

That is why i like having 24 hour military shopettes available to me.  I dont drink very often but if i want to pick up some beer time of day or the day of the week should not have to be a consideration.

I agree, it is a pretty dumb law. I guess they figure no one needs a beer until church lets out. I wish they would change it!

You are missing the real purpose of the law, but Dave hit pretty close.

Its reasoning is two-fold:

A: To discourage people from showing up in church smelling like alcohol and talking like Foster Brooks. (how socially embarrassing for a room full of folks in their Sunday best)

B: To ensure that there's not a run on beer at the store--- this give the churchgoers a chance to pick some up on the way home before it's all gone. ("Let's see, I'll take a pack of gum, one of those pens, a couple of those pocket combs there, a roll of Lifesavers, a sixpack of Bud Light, two of those Slim Jims, a gallon of milk, oh, and one more sixpack...") :jester:

I'm joking of course, but reason A is actually pretty close to the original social spirit of laws banning Sunday alcohol sales.

Everyone wants to blame it on Baptist, but honesty I think it's just old conservatives in general who do t want to vote to change the laws.

I'm a baptist and it infuriates me that the liquor stores are closed on Sunday. If they choose to be closed that's fine, but forced to by law is incredibly stupid.

MSNBC just blamed this on the NRA....   More news to follow

I buy almost all of my beer at the liquor store, so I plan ahead or do without. But the law is incredibly stupid.

Shoot, just make the drive down here to Nashville. I'm never without a 12 pack or two, I'll give you some to get you you through your yard work.

Agreed on it being a stupid law. But I have yet to hear the reason why these laws are in place, though they are close. The reason I have always heard these are in place is for safer travel for church goers. IE Less DUIs during that time...supposedly.

That sounds like a heap of hogwash to me. Keep in mind we are talking about the 7am-11am time frame for going to and from church. I tend to doubt that there is any other time with less drunks on the road simply due to the hours.

If it were true that would piss me off even worse. That would essentially be saying that its more important to protect me one day a week as I travel to church than it is to protect me the 5 or 6 days I travel to and from work.

At the end of the day I see no just reason for the law. I'd vote to change it.
