How (not to) wash a wool blanket: A Public Service Announcement

Recommended Posts

Everyone knows wool blankets are great for emergency bags, trunks, and general use.Everyone may not know how to wash one if it becomes dirty.

If you must wash a wool blanket, DO NOT USE HOT WATER.  I seem to have made a tactical error and used heavy wash and hot water.  The results are not too good. My blankets are now ratty and have shed a boatload of material.  Afterwards, I went online to see how to wash them and saw I was supposed to use cold water and either hand-wash or delicate cycle.  These two blankets are currently drying in the sun and will become trunk blankets. (So I guess it's not a total loss)

Any service member who was issued two white sheets and a wool blanket knows they aren't great for keeping you warm or maintaining a universal shape.

A poncho liner on the other hand is worth it's very light weight in gold.

Add a poncho and a quality space blanket and you will have an awesome improvised sleeping bag as well.

The smoking jacket also is a packing list favorite of mine. Plus, now you get to look old school when you sport one.
