Governor Christie's Gun control

And another "R" going to the other side. Wasn't he a top dog Republican at one point?

April 20, 2013
TRENTON, N.J. – Gov. Chris Christie on Friday unveiled a multifaceted plan to curb gun violence in New Jersey that includes expanding government-funded mental health treatment, requiring parental sign-off before children can buy or rent violent video games and mandating that ID presented by would-be gun-owners is government-issued.

The Republican’s plan also includes a ban on the sale of Barrett .50-caliber semi-automatic sniper rifles, bail reforms that would make it harder for people suspected of violent gun crimes to be released and provisions to make it easier for courts and health care professionals to involuntarily commit people they consider violent to a psychiatric hospital.

The plan does not address classroom security or propose stricter limits on the capacity of ammunition magazines, which in New Jersey stands at 15 rounds.

“Assuring that there are common-sense safety measures when it comes to purchasing guns, and enforcing appropriate and aggressive criminal penalties for those who violate gun laws is not enough,” Christie said at a news conference at the state Capitol announcing the measures. “This is about violence control. In order to deal with the kind of violence we’re seeing, we must address the many contributing factors to that violence.”

Christie announced the proposals one week after receiving a report from a task force he created following the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

The group recommended the periodic renewal of gun licenses and a law banning people from buying guns for others. It also recommended helping those with mental illness.

The governor’s proposals come two days after the Senate in Washington rejected expanding background checks to more gun sales. Members of the Democrat-controlled state Legislature proposed their own gun laws, none of which has reached the governor’s desk. The Assembly in February fast-tracked 22 bills that place limits on magazine sizes, require mental health clearances and photo IDs for gun permits, and bar anyone on the federal terrorist watch list from obtaining a gun.

New Jersey’s gun laws are among the strictest in the nation. The state does not allow gun shows, for example, and is one of seven states with an assault-weapon ban and one of three with a one-gun-a-month law. New Jersey is also one of 11 states with a waiting period for gun purchases and one of seven with a limit on magazine capacity.

New Jersey banned Hollow Point ammunition.  I never understood the reasoning behind that so I have presumed that the law makers in New Jersey don't know anything about firearms. They think a Barret .50 is an anti-aircraft rifle that shoots heat seaking missles.

Humm...I admit I didn't do an in depth study of what Christie is proposing so maybe I'm missing something important but other than beefing up addressing the mental health issues I don't see a big change here from what is already law in NJ.

I know that most "gun control" laws do absolutely nothing except infringe on the rights of the law-abiding but the "mental health" issue is one that really does need to be addressed...that issue scares me to death because of the significant potential for abuse and because I don't trust politicians to deal with the issue well even if they don't abuse it. However, I think most of us realize that firearms in the hands of mentally unstable people IS a major problem and we need to find a way to deal with it.

Christie doesn't have to do anything new to show he's no friend of gun owners --  New Jersey has very repressive gun laws, and Christie has said on interviews more than once that he thinks NJ's gun laws are "about right". That's all ya really need to know.

Christie is a RINO.  He leans to the side that can help him the most. I have no respect for the man personally.

& he leans to the buffet first.
Folks don't be surprised here. New england republican politician are mostly liberals. A few can be called moderates. That was one of the problems with romney, remember he had a gun ban too. People liked christie for his brash in your face approach, found it refreshing. I've met a dozen big italian boys make him look like a sissy though but it's all imagery for the libs so that's how a republican gets elected up there. Bear in mind, a good chunk of their populations wants this legislation to make themselves feel safe. Bunch of delusional cuckolded totalitarians-in-waiting.

I think the entire North East political machine has flushed the Constitution down the toilet. I hate it for the people that live there that are not on the train to oblivian.

Because 50 cal are used to rob every other grocery store and are standard for muggings, I fully support gov christie chaging parties to one that is more friendly to idiocy and illogic.

He also make Lumpy look smart.

Although, seeing interviews with him later in life, the actor(Frank Bank), seemed to have a lot on the ball.

Well .50bmg's are skarry! So regardless of the fact that they're never used to commit crimes, they're too skarry to be legal!

*sigh* we are quickly becoming a nanny state for hand-wringers & bed-wetters, instead of the land of the free, home of the brave ...

You're right. He was an investment advisor. Clients included The Beave and Mrs. Billingsley.

If I'm not mistaken Christie was on the list of everyone's favorite Republicans around here a few years ago.

Isn't it cute how that works around here? I recall many people here supporting John McCain also.

I sometimes get frustrated by the fact that republicans will eat their own sometimes with a scary quickness meanwhile democrats will line up lockstep behind people that say the most ridiculous, unconstitutional & absurd things. Then I remember conservatives actually have a principled ideology & are generally logically consistent.

I agree..."top dog" maybe in the eyes of establishment Republicans but certainly not in the eyes of Republicans who are conservative.

I will admit, I have admired much of his fiscal policy and his plainly worded discussions that he has had with the liberal establishment in NJ...I realize I'm judging from afar here but he seems to walk a fiscal that, perhaps isn't "conservative" but is at least realistic.
