Senate rejects tougher background checks

E) he may be right in the long run

In the meanwhile, I'm enjoying MSNBC so far tonight. Chris Matthews looks sooo crestfallen.

God I hope not, we must be ever vigilant, and wait and see, I am sure Obama has punishment on his mind, he doesn't play well with others, just witness the sequestration nonsense...

Two things that made me laugh while watching this unfold in the senate -

1) Feinstein's head spinning right off in her speech before the vote on the AWB amendment

2) In the address to the press after voting ended today, Harry Reid raving about how out of touch Republicans were, everyone was crazy for

not voting for common sense stuff like Manchin Toomey.....oh wait!  He didn't mention that he voted against Manchin Toomey too!

Wish someone would have called him on that during the conference.

I will say that today Corker and Alexander towed the line for us here in TN though.

The Senate Dems had their shirts handed to them today and it was enjoyable to watch there reaction in the press conference on C-Span. Just wish they were not using victim families to move their social agenda. The President in his news conference IMO showed intense anger for having his shirt handed to him. He was very, very pissed. People, this fight ain't over by a long shot. Hopefully now we can have some calm for a little while to let things settle down. Maybe the Senate can work on something constructive that will help the nation although Harry Reid wants to move next to taxing of internet sells. The US Senate is dysfunctional!

No... there's no "E", lol. Please, no.

Life is long, bro, and the progressives ain't going away. Start thinking about 2014, 'cause the GOP ain't taking back the Senate, and as much as we hate on them, they must keep the House.

Absolutely the repubs must keep the house, else the goose is cooked.

I say it many times a day on here and other places too. The way things have worked out, 2014 mid terms are turning out to be the most important election of my 60 year lifetime as far as freedoms are concered.  It's a perfect storm brewing in the near future.

I feel the same way.  I talked until I was blue in the face about the evils of an Obama 2nd term.  I even had friends and family that said they wouldn't vote for Romney, but wasn't voting for Obama either. I told them to vote Romney and regroup in 2016....nope. They wouldn't listen. I heard it all...."They can't take our guns.....Supreme courts done ruled in our favor..."  They are all crying now.....ANYONE other than Obama.....too late now though.

I am not all that concerned about Republicans losing the house in 2014.  I think they will hold that one.  As far as the senate goes, the GOP has a decent chance of regaining control considering 10 of the 20 senate Democrat seats are fair game.  It all comes down to the type of candidates that are nominated.  If they employ the same "most electable" strategy they used the last two elections, they will more than likely lose.

Well well well, it looks like B-Ho, the Narcissist in Chief, got a dose of what this country is all about. For the first time in 5 years, our representatives actually listened to us...which just so happens to be what he hates the most about this country.

Did they pull the plug on voting on any more of the amendments to "President Obama's Bill", or do those still get voted on?

And even presuming that all the amendments will be defeated (a couple of which are supposedly desired by gun nuts, such as universal recognition of carry licenses)-- What the heck is the "nugget" in Obama's bill, if nothing gets amended to it? Is that vote still on? Has cloture already been voted (last week) allowing a majority vote on the "nugget" of Obama's original bill? Allowing a simple majority vote to pass Obama's bill? Collins and McCain would probably vote for it.

Or is a possible filibuster of Obama's bill still in the future? Or are they gonna throw up their hands and forget the whole thing for awhile?

Still curious what is in the original bill.

All of the three went down, Lester. Don't know if their were more, but sure there would have been, eventually.

Ms. Feinstein's, Toomey-Manchin and the magazine ban all went down, only to resurface in 2014.

Two more amendments to be voted on tomorrow, but I can't temember which. Universal concealed carry was voted down today, although both Alexander and Corker voted Aye, just for the record.

I think the embarrasment has been done for the Dems, though, regardless of tomorrows votes.

Be happy of todays battle tonight, but the war is not won.

Thanks 6.8 and SuperDuty. Haven't been paying attention to this one, but those are all amendments to a core gun bill apparently. So what is in the core gun bill, even if it remains un-amended at the end of the day? Will the core bill get voted on? We have enough idiots like McCain and friends that maybe it could pass if it ever comes up for a vote, so was wondering what is in the "core bill" and if it will eventually get voted on.

And in 2016, it will be "vote (enter establishment Republican here) and regroup in 2020." In 2020, it will be the same. The same in 2024, 2028, 2032...

You may be right, but I hope not.....You post some really interesting info ETP and you get to hear things from both sides of the isle on a lot of issues....I"d like to hear you're opinion.  What do you see in America's future. Are we destined to go down the Socialist road?  Or will things turn around before we get that far?

I hope you guys don't mind if I do a little gloating.  I rarely get to do it.  ;)

I believe there is very important lesson for all of us (certainly for me) to learn during this ordeal. Don't get caught with your pants down. When the hysteria subsides and prices retreat back from their stratospheric heights, if you have some firearm or accessory that has been on your wish list, your short on ammo, or need some more mags etc..., it might be wise to go ahead and get them. As I stated earlier, I don't not believe most of the congressional stuff stands a chance at passing (at this time). However, this was definitely a shot across the bow and a foreshadowing of things to come in the future if things turn sour.

Hopefully, I will be correct on prices as well.  There are some things I want to buy.

The core bill is Schumer's background check bill, nothing to do with Feinstein's, which simply never hit the floor.

It is S 374, and eloquently called "Fix Gun Checks Act of 2013".

Here's the full text:

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/113/s374/text

As I understand it, the whole brouhaha to allow it on the floor was the first filibuster vote, where everybody called every Republican who voted for that a traitor, but it was allowed so that the Manchin-Toomey (and the other 6 or 7 amendments) could also be introduced. But with the special 60 vote threshold deal, all the subsequent votes were in actuality also votes to end filibuster on each of them. Still unclear to me if a yes vote would have also enacted them, but a moot point I guess, as if you can get 60 votes you can almost certainly get 51.

But given the filibuster status,as a couple of Dems were saying in consolation today, the original bill AND all the amendments remain on the Senate calendar thorough the rest of the 113th Congress, as they were not actually technically defeated as per rules, but only dropped due to lack of stopping filibuster. And can be brought up at any time they think the vote structure may have shifted, without being resubmitted and going through committee process and all that.

Then you've got Reid saying that rules call for needing a single dissenting vote from the majority in order to bring them up also, but dunno if that's written in stone, or a "courtesy protocol". At any rate, he's a lying dog to say that's why he "had" to vote no, as 4 other Dems voted no before he did on the roll call.

Very convoluted indeed, and just another reason we all hate the bastards up there, as the general public can't even understand how the damn loaded dice game is even actually played, since the "rules" are so very flexible.
