Sex offenders in my area

I just looked up my neighborhood on this website and found multiple rape, sexual assault and child molestation offenders in my area. Kind of makes you think a bit more closely about your home defense plan, etc.

I've been using that site for years when we've at different locations. It's always good to know who's around you. Even if the info isn't 100% current, it's better than no info.

It's straight country here. The sex offender and meth manufacturer/user totals are astonishing. No, downright disgusting.

Zoom out and every major city is a solid map of convicts; anyone in a city of any size is within a couple min drive of multiple convicts...

...Which highlights our failed justice system. Slap 'em on the hand for child molestation and send them along their merry way. As long as you register as a perv, then the public is safer! (Not!)

The repeat offenders provide revenue for most counties. You didn't know that? lol Why send them away to prison when they can keep coming and going from county jail. More court fines/fees, more court appointed attorney fees, more bail. It all equals more revenue. It's a corrupt and damaged world we live in.

OTOH, I know a man on TN's list for a misdemeanor charge of 'sexual battery' that happened over 30 years ago. I don't know the particulars, but probably a domestic situation.

He wouldn't hurt a fly today, but he's a prohibited person for life...

There are people out there like this. Not to mention the guy who has sex with his 17.9 year old girl friend two days after his 18th birthday. I know it's rare but it happens.

Before getting too worried use the TBI site to cross reference. What looks like you are surrounded might not actually be so.

I would be mindful of them and make sure to know what their faces look like. I would also let your children know that they are "bad" people without specifics and tell your children to tell you if they the "bad" people ever try to talk to them. You cannot grief those on the sexual offender registry at all, which sucks. I wish it was a requirement for them to ALWAYS wear a hat or shirt that said "I am a sexual predator" as well as a sign in their front yard. Or a specialized license plate for their van.

Any violent sexual predator or child molester should have to fight for their life in court. They should not be able to plea out or have treatment at tax payer expense. They must go to trial so the jury can see what type of predator they are then the defense has to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, how keeping them alive will benefit society. If the defense can't prove that or if the jury can't come to a unanimous decision on the punishment then the default is death. I honestly do not believe those who violently prey on others or molest small children have the ability to change. By default they should be put to death unless their are mitigating circumstances which I cannot think of any other than maybe severe mental illness and in those cases they should never be set free no matter how well the medication is working.

The only exception is those cases in which the two parties are concenting and only if the youngest is at least 16 years of age while the eldest is no more than 19. If the youngest person is under 16 and the elder is 18 or older they are a sexual predator. If one is 16 or 17 and the other is 16, 17, 18 or 19 then no problem as long as they are concenting. And if there is more than 10 years difference between the minor and then the elder then the elder should be classified as a violent sexual predator and face the consequences above.

I read an article a few years back out of, I believe, Georgia where a 17 year old female was dating her 17 year old boyfriend. They were having consensual  sex and when he turned 18 he was arrested and charged with child rape. If I remember correctly the girl turned 18 a few months later. I know there was a big to do about it and he was found guilty which required him to register for life as a sex offender. In that case I believe the law was applied wrongly. There have also been cases of minors texting naked pictures of themselves only to be charged with tafficking in child pornography even though they are children themselves.

If I were king, I'd have "RAPIST" tattooed on each cheek, so they can't hide it with a hat or glasses or beard.

Pedophiles would just be sentenced to extremely hard labor somewhere far from civilized people...killing is too good for them.

the bulk of them were doing something idiotic like whacking in public.  The 3 closest to me have things like "lewd conduct".   People have been marked as sex offenders for being naked in their own homes and a kid sees em thru the window or something.  Or for watching porn in public.  Etc.   Not all sex offenders deserve more than a slap on the wrist.  If it involves an actual living victim that interacted with the actual criminal, that is a serious offense.  The rest of it --- is overreaction often.

OK, time to play devils advocate. I agree with most of the comments posted here.

I understand the nature of the crime and most "sex offenders" are always going to commit twice or more. Why do we accept the fact that once they have been found guilty and did their time we get to label and persecute them for the rest of their lives? It's like their punishment never ends and the rules keeping changing and adding more and more to it? What if they were to do that for speeding or any other crime out there?

If the crime is found to be that haness then shouldn't we make a stiffer penalty from the start?

I have to say I don't feel too good about this whole registering thing.  I realize the courts have said it is not punitive, but clearly it is.  These people are paying for crimes for the rest of their lives, long after their sentences are over and their debt to society is supposedly paid.  Meanwhile we have no registry for murderers.  It makes no sense to me, and seems to be a "feel good" measure for the public.

I believe in capitol punishment for murderers, rapists and the like, but it also seems to be that if you have done your time for a crime that should be the end of it.  A lifetime of punishment just seems unamerican.

Those that spoke of cases where someone was unjustly added to the registry, I agree and that needs to be fixed, retroactively.

For those that want stiffer penalties, TN doesn't seem to do very strong penalties IMHO. Then there are the prosecutors and judges that plea bargain weak penalties into oblivion.

2 cases in point from the Cookeville Herald-Citizen in the past week.

http://www.herald-citizen.com/view/full_story/22237772/article-Gainesboro-woman-gets-six-months-for-reckless-homicide?instance=main_article

This story is a reckless homicide. According to the story "The indictment alleged that Apple was driving while intoxicated." The grand jury indicted her on 1 count of vehicular homicide and 6 counts of aggravated assault. She's serving 6 months, yes, 6 months for causing a death and injuring 6.

http://www.herald-citizen.com/view/full_story/22256418/article-Sex-offender-gets-15-years?instance=main_article

Here's one specifically about a child molester. Charged with 3 counts of rape of a 5 year old girl. Goes to court and pleads out to 1 count of aggravated sexual battery. 15 year sentence, with time served he'll be out in under 14. The little girl will be a 21 year old mental basket case and he'll be 57 and trolling the streets again. This guy is the poster child for capital punishment for child rapists but SCOTUS says no. Remember, when you think of how disfunctional our government can be and how well they can hose things up, the courts are just one of the branches of government.

Does anyone honestly believe people like this serve enough time and don't deserve a lifetime of being labled a perv?

When using the TBI registry, don't forget it includes people that may not deserve a lifetime registration along with those that did far worse than what they were convicted of (see my post above). If you find an offender in your neighborhood, take the time to find out more. Protect your families with knowlege to know who's a real potential danger and who's just a kid that got caught in the system. Knowlege is power.

Just did a search within a 5 mile radius of my address using the TBI site and came up with 70 registered sex offenders. (And I thought this was a "good area") Just goes to show you.....

Yep, you never know.  I've got a violent sex offender living literally a mile or two down the road.  There are three sex offenders, two with offenses involvinig children, that live within 3 miles of the school my kids attend.

Just be sure to remember that it could be a totally different person living there. IE the address was added to the database and never updated when the person moved down the street. Or more likely, just updated with their new address, thus making it appear there are now 2 offenders in the area etc.
