Ammo Questions

Let's say it's true that the DHS is buying / has bought all the ammo - millions of rounds, and that this is causing the shortage.

Shouldn't the ammo manufacturers simply stop selling / shipping to the DHS?  And instead, sell / ship to distributors so that the public can have access to the ammo again?

I thought for sure the panic buying would have been over by now and the shortage would have worked it's way back to equilibrium.  That is not the case - it is harder to find 9mm now than it was a month ago.

The trickle down effect is obvious.  No shooting at gun ranges, lost revenue, lost jobs, business closing.

Also, why even buy a gun if you can't shoot anything through it?

So what do you think?  IS the DHS the reason for the shortage?  And if so, why are they using OUR money to buy so much ammunition?

I don't see an end to this situation.  Can the gun hobby sustain another year of this?  Is that what the powers in Washington are hoping for?

Just throwing out some thoughts I had today and wanted to hear your thoughts.

I am not a conspiracy theorist.  But something is definitely going on here out of the ordinary - and surely more than public panic buying, don't you think?

OK, DHS is buying ammo, just not all at one time, the buy is over a few years.

We are the bottom of the list for ammo, GOV, LEO then us.

Ammo is being bought by people and resold at higher prices, taking advantage

of the ones that can not stand in line, in stores or on line.

My advice is ether get a friend that works at a store, get updates sent to your phone about supplies.

I reload and cast, started last year, I have no worries, stocked up on supplies last fall to mid winter.

Get into reloading, bit of an up front price, but it will pay for it self in a few months, think of the gas

you will save on not driving and looking. Someone posted they drove to Knoxville from close to Nashville.

Came home with just a few boxes.

It's my understanding that re-loading supplies are hard to find now as well.  Have you found that to be the case?

To what?

To your DHS question, I think.

DHS is not behind the ammo shortage. Keep in mind the shortage is for more than hollow point pistol rounds and 223.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the DHS contract is just that, a contract to buy at a set price. It is not like they are actually purchasing billions of rounds at once.

Thanks for clearing that up.  So you think it is just panic buying?  The manufacturers must be loving this.

I'm sure they're loving it, the problem is that by the basic rules of economics the fact that they can't keep shelves filled at the current price point is sure to spell out a price increase.

It is the gougers and the hoarders, the first time buyers and us, the guys who go through 500+ rounds at a simple day at the range and refuse to have less than 1000 rounds on tap per caliber.

Man, I wish it would level out.  I would love to shoot my 9mm guns.

I am starting to stock up on 12 gauge shells.  1 box a week on payday.  Maybe I should do 2...

You and me both brother. Nothing I'd like more than to go back to getting my weekly shoot stash on Friday and hitting the range on Saturday. It will happen, this isn't the first time guns/ammo have been hard to come by and it won't be the last.

People are spending money they don't have on things they don't need.

A friend that owns a firearm store, told me that most of his sales have gone onto credit cards. More so in the last few months than ever. Six months ago it was 90% cash, now 90% on credit.

Also says that his same customers that came in twice a year, come in once a week now. Hoping to buy any kind of ammo.

We have seen the videos and press releases. Ammo manufacturers are making more than ever. What I don't understand is why aren't the stores getting the ammo at least at the volume before the shortage.

For instance. My friend may get one or two bricks of .22 a week. Why? His supplier isn't taking any new accounts and is trying to divide up the ammo among the active accounts, ( what they say.) So with that info, the manufacturers or suppliers are holding out. The price from the supplier has not changed. Bricks of .22 are still sub $20to the store.

So my theory. Buyers buying anything with nothing. Manufacturers or suppliers are holding the ammo. What is it?

I was talking to someone about ammo, or lack of, and this popped out of my mouth. We all know there are new gun owners, hoarders, resellers, regulars buying, so that is a lot of it. Lets use .308 as the example ammo. If Academy stocks 50 boxes (average). They sell say 10 boxes per week, and replenish with say 15 boxes per week which makes up for the occasional rush in which they sell more than their typical 10/week. They keep their shelves stocked that way. BUT, when each and every shipment is swallowed up (now) as soon as it hits the floor, there is no way to keep up. In the previous example I've given, the extra 40 boxes left on the shelves each week are a cushion till the next truck comes in. There is NONE of that now.

I hope that's all it is.  I guess I just need to be in the right place at the right time.
