OK... educate me PGO/pistol grip shotguns

Saw this posted on another thread, but I wanted to ask it in the correct forum. Is it true that you can buy a "proven" pistol grip Mossberg Cruiser, and put a 14" barrel on it legally in the state of Tennessee? SO long as it is 26" + and never came equipped with a stock? Thats insane.... I just wanted to make sure I read that correctly. Seems like it would be an AOW or SBS... Thanks for the education.

There is a post on this forum that I think describes why it is an oversight. It's not a shotgun, it is a firearm, it has never been a shoulder fired shotgun, it meets the OAL of 26"+.... etc.

I have provided all the information you need.

There are dozens of example letters to the ATF that state what I stated is indeed fact.

I cannot guarantee local LE will not hassle you because the vast majority are clueless to NFA rules. But in the end you are not required to show your NFA documents because they are protected tax records. And those with the authority to see them would not want to see the copy most of us carry around. You could print off a copy of the ruling and carry it with the "firearm" to prove its legality.

Or if you are still unclear then write a letter to the ATF. Then wait three months for a response that is identical to what you have already been told.

You are more than welcome to do the research I have done.

I will research to see if there is any Tennessee specific laws but they generally mirror federal laws.

I don't doubt you at all. I've started researching this and I get it. You just have to make sure you start with a pistol grip only shotgun such as the mossberg cruiser. Then, add the 14" mossberg front end. The birdhead grip puts it to 26+ oal,.. You are done .

Note that if length of a muzzle device is needed to reach the 26" OAL, it must be permanently affixed to count.

of course

Figured you probably knew, but lots of folks don't think of it. Like me, and not too long ago.

Even though I well knew the rule regarding getting to 16" barrel to not violate SBR, when I assembled my 10.5" barrel pistol, and it happened to come out to 26.25", I thought hey, maybe I'll try a VFG on it, and even bought the grip before somebody mentioned the permanent flash hider requirement to me regarding OAL. Duh on moi.

Yes thanks for the insight. I like 14.5" AR barrels and I like to make the OAL 16.1". I pin and weld them. I don't mess around with the big laws!!! Edited by serbu50
