Today was not a yes or no on the bill itself, this vote was a parliamentary procedure to not allow a filibuster and begin debate on the bill.

The filibuster idea was bad politics.

A filibuster would have been used as a giant political sledgehammer (via the media) against the Republicans and would cause far more long-term damage than good. Let's not forget that Democrats (and their media friends) are far better at lying than Republicans. The more votes that are taken to amend this bill, debate this bill, comment on this bill, the better. They all need to be put on record, especially regarding Feinstein's amendment on the AWB & magazine size limits.

There is a very good chance that even with a scaled back version of background checks - - - this bill won't pass the final vote, which would be a total humiliation for Obama.

Even if it narrowly passes, so what - - -  Anybody see the House even working on a bill?

BUT we should definitely burn up their phone lines, fill their emails inboxes and let them know what we think of this bill.

No, no... don't bother.  All people want to hear is that the fight is already lost, the country is coming apart at the seams, the Republicans are secretly scheming against us, and gun confiscations by FEMA and the UN are scheduled to begin on July 1st of this year.  Coolheaded logic no longer makes any difference when it relates to the 2nd Amendment.  The entire Congress could pass a law declaring absolute prohibition against all gun control and people would still scream and yell about it being a veiled attempt to get 2nd Amendment supporters to let their guard down while they cart in the FEMA trucks.

To make all this possible, I think we'd need to mix in an economic collapse.

This should make people here feel better:

Republicans, Democrats and the NRA secretly working on full gun control legislation?

The Republican Establishment Sellout to Obama may be more imminent than we think – – unless you and I can get all our family and friends to act swiftly and decisively to STOP THE REPUBLICAN LED SELL OUT to Barack Hussein Obama.

That’s right!

And Republican Majority Leader is leading the charge to cut a deal with President Obama.

[...]

The truth is, if the Forced Gun Owner Registration Act passes, the only way to comply will be through a national gun registration scheme – – much like the German law requiring Jews to wear the Star of David on their sleeves for identification and registration purposes.

And you and I both know what registration of Jews produced.

And you and I both know gun owner registration is the first step toward . . .

. . . TOTAL GUN CONFISCATION!

Gun confiscation was also another one of Hitler’s first laws passed – – all in the name of public safety of course.

Is all this sounding eerily familiar? The gun grabbers understand what is happening so must we.

That is why the real purpose of the Obama/Holder scheme and their well-meaning but badly deceived and misled allies at the NRA is to effectively force gun owners to accept a national gun registry in order to protect themselves from Barack Obama’s ATF goon sting operations.

So the NRA gets to make money while unwittingly supporting a law meant to save us but that will eventually enslave us.

Worse yet, the Forced Gun Owner Registration Act is supported by members of both political parties – many who claim to be “pro-gun.”

Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins and Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk joined Leahy as cosponsors of this anti-gun scheme in the Senate.

Dolomite has it right. There was a pretty big turn over in Dickson Co. last election cycle. I think all but 2 incumbents lost their seats. That includes every office or commissioner. Also the PRIMARIES are the place to fight this. Make sure they don't even get nominated. Otherwise you're stuck voting between the incumbent RINO or a Democrat.

I got through to Alexander's office by phone. Corker is still busy.

Me: I am extremely disappointed and I will do everything I can to help make sure he is not reelected. He lost a lot of votes today.

Intern: Sir, they didn't actually vote on the bill today they voted to begin debate

Me: I know. Let's call it what it is. They voted to break the fillibuster. He should have joined it, not blocked it. He blew a chance to possibly kill it altogether.

Intern: Sir, this just would have delayed it. A fillibuster probably would not have blocked it. It would have came through anyway.

Me: So why not try to delay it? Anything was better than nothing.

Intern: Sir, The motion got 68 votes. Even if he voted against it they still would have needed 8 more votes to stop it.

Me: He should have at least tried. So if you think you might lose a battle you just go ahead and give up???

Intern: well...no sir....

Me: You just let him know he was on thin ice anyway and this probably just lost him the next election. Have a good day.

Intern: You too, sir.

Personally, I think you did a great job.  A concession is a concession no matter.  You'll come back and fight harder later???....yeah right.  I'm on with Dolomite. Vote the bass turds out. We need many more with backbone like   Paul, Lee, Cruz, Rubio and Moran, Inhofe of Oklahoma, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Mike Enzi of Wyoming, Jim Risch and Mike Crapo of Idaho, Dan Coats of Indiana and Pat Roberts of Kansas. Without this group GROWING....the party will die, or be assimilated.......which is the same thing.

They are TRUE lovers of liberty and our CONSTITUTION. The rest are dregs.....crust encapsulated RINOS....

AMEN...!!!!

Well, the aide probably knows and Lamar certainly does know that:

- No TN Republican Senator has ever lost a reelection primary.

- Only one has ever lost reelection bid (and you'd have to vote for a Dem to help Lamar become the second).

What you say is true...up until now.  The tide is changing....MANY are tired of what they see taking place.  It's time we really start looking at the long term.  The Republcans are not only losers but sympathizers....They are not even thinkng about the millions that have bought firearms to defend themseves in the past few months. They are blind as bats and look at past data to make them feel good about what they feel they should do or the present "feel good" piece fo legislation...(Again with no thought about what is right or wrong for America.) With the exeption of an elie few, the republican party is out the feak'n door. (to add....they can kiss my ass) They have succedded in turnin me iinto an indepedenent.} because I am so pissed off........A vote aginst them is a vote for freedoem!!!!

Agree with that, but that only leaves the Dems.

The Tea Party, as I predicted, has been mostly diluted and then absorbed. And a minority of stalwarts notwithstanding, they can't take over the GOP, so the only alternative is the one I suggested from the its inception, a third party, even given the woeful history of those, too.

But ultimately, I don't believe the Progressive Tide will turn until the Big Pain hits, and most everyone suffers.

A Rand Paul would fare about as did Goldwater back when, regardless of party affiliation in the current national ethos, or rather, lack of one.

I called Sen. Corker's office, I could hear the phones ringing off the wall, I expressed my disappointment and a staffer told me that the vote was only to bring the matter to the floor and that Sen.Corker would vote against it............guess we will see.

But the thing is the next vote only needs 51 to pass.  Our two Senators did a lot of damage today.  I will not forget when they come up for election the next time.

I'm afraid I can't see one. Things will have to crash before they can be rebuilt. Given current population levels and a myriad of other factors, I can see no combination of circumstances under which things would improve rather than continue to decline for the vast majority of US residents. I do believe we're at the point that only the ship's speed toward the iceberg can be modified, and the degree of personal freedom allowed on board.

Only question I see is whether is stays a slow sliding decline of all things once idealized as "American", or whether an abrupt crash causes a more immediate game changer.

I see the only "winning scenario" for the foreseeable future as a personal, familial based one, more akin to multi-generational survivalism than any other "ism" regarding political ideology.

But to end on a more upbeat note,  that's only the good news. ;)

I agree....but it's way too late.  I think...our electives have sold us out. And against our constitutional rights......it's a sad day in American History..

We don't need to quit the Republican Party, but we need to fight and re-take the party with conservative and constitutional Tea Party candidates. Third party has a long losing history of 150 years or longer. Let's get a primary candidate to run against Alexander who will pledge to uphold the Constitution. If we can beat Alexander then we can take back the R party, and then maybe the WH. I'm not-gonna quit and surrender yet.

You, Sir, are very wise.....Believe it or not, I see as you do. Especially when I look from the outsde. I've lived the largest portion of my life and I know this.  I see America in it's present form as a take what you can before the ship goes down attitude. Extremely diffenent from even 50 years ago. God help us all.....
