Tennessee Senators vote FOR Cloture on Gun Bill

Recommended Posts

Dad always told me "Better to have an enemy you can predict than a so-called friend you can't."  Yeah, I'd likely pull that lever with a (D) beside it before I'd ever cast a vote for either of these two chameleons again.

I voted for the Democrat, Mark E. Clayton, who ran against Corker in 2012. I assure you that although he's a certifiable nut, he's more conservative both Corker and Alexander. I believe with all my heart he would have voted differently today, and would have better represented us than what we currently have.

I wasn't going for which one is more conservative than the other, but I doubt that. Saying that is like

having no opposition for the race, but that's okay. I still would have voted for Corker. Principles do

mean something and I understand your position, but Ford was the first race, and that would have

been tragic if he was elected.

The Senate would have expected Clayton to have voted a certain way up to a certain point in his term.

I think you should know that. That's the way it is with either party, unfortunately. Clayton would have voted

for Obamacare. I don't know Clayton's political history, so I wouldn't have voted for him on that alone.

The Tennessee Democrat Party is more aligned with the national party than even we think sometimes.

they are more likely to whip their votes better than Republicans, who are usually less whip-able.

I'd run against them. I wouldn't have a chance of winning, but still would love to. I think I'd have a good platform.

-fiscal responsibility

-promotion of individual responsibility versus nanny state

-pro 2A

-common sense versus political popularity

I'm a 9 year veteran of the US Army, served in both OEF and OIF. BA in organizational management, graduated summa cum laude. I'd have a couple of things against me; definitely not a politician, I'm all about standing up for what I see as right (to the point where I will absolutely not back down) and I'm a social liberal on a few issues.

Oh and I'm not rich.

In the world of politics, this is a disqualifying characteristic.

I just got through contacting both Alexander's and Corker's office and voiced my disappoinment and disgust with thier vote to support Harry Reid and the gun grabbers. I will work actively the next campaign cycle to see that both of them are primaried.

I knew both of them were weak on this, but I have e-mails from both of them that state that neither would support or vote for any legislation that would infringe on our 2nd Ammendment right.

Greg.

Same here. I'd post the Senators responses to my 2nd Amendment concerns but, you all got the same cover letters. Got a letter from the Prez yesterday on the issue, and I'm all warm and fuzzy inside...

I got a call from Corker's Chief Council this afternoon.  I reckon they are getting the drift that they may have stepped in it this time.  He tried the same old, "We feel the Senate is where issues should be debated" scam on me.  I told him first, in my mind the debate on the 2nd was done in the early 1700's between us and England, and, between the Citizens of the US during the years it took to ratify the Constitution, which required the Bill of Rights to get that done.

Secondly, I told him the whole thing reminded me of having a cottonmouth tied up in a tote sack, and taking that bag into my grandkid's Sunday School class and cutting the tie and dumping it on the floor.  I assure him that the class teacher and the kids could debate what to do, but that I was pretty sure that they were not better off by having that discussion, when it could have been avoided in the first fricken place.

Folks, while i agree in principal with most of what has been said here about alexander and corker; the "real" vote in the senate is the one that will come up on this issue; not the one allow "cloture" or debate.  The vote on the final bill has not been taken yet.  The "cloture" vote was a "quid pro quo" vote to buy or pay back a favor (...in my estimation...).  It also makes these two look "reasonable" and "statesmenlike" to many (...not all...) of us.  I agree that we should keep up the pressure to vote against this thing on principal.

Alexander and Corker would do well to heed the admonitions of those who counsel against any "enhancements" to background checks.   I'm old enough to remember a guy by the name of Albert Gore Sr who was thrown out of office after 30 or so years for voting for the Gun Control Act of 1968.

Keep up the pressure.

And as I understand it, there's going to be votes on a bunch of amendments too, including assault weapon and hi-cap bans, maybe Blumenthal's ammo restrictions, whatever, as apparently none of these will go through committee process but will be offered during the discussion phase.

I got in contact with Alexanders office and they said that Senator Alexander only voted for this bill to "proceed".  The staff member said that this way he could see what is in the bill. DUH That sounds like something out of Nancy Pellosi's playbook.  If its gun control, which it is, and it come from Harry Reid which it did, then why does he need to see what's in it?

So, what's new? ObamaCare got thru & no one had read it.

Comrades, the votes have already been counted and the republican party has added them up. Alex. will be able to say he voted no while some other senator not up for reelection next year will take his place. It will appear to be a close vote but everyone knows what the script says. Some version of universal background checks has been preordained.

Keep up the good work, Worriedman. I wish I could state my thoughts as eloquently as you.

A couple of days ago Senator Manchin said this:  â€œNobody here in this great Capitol of ours with a good conscience could sit by and not try to prevent a day like that from happening again,” said Manchin of the Newtown shooting. “I think that’s what we’re doing.”

http://www.politico.com/story/2013/04/gun-background-checks-deal-89856.html

Therein lies my biggest concern with this bill.  There are those who say let 'em have this small victory and then they'll leave us alone......right.  When the next tragedy occurs, and it will, then they'll say..."if we had only done a little bit more....we just didn't go far enough!"

Only a practiced politician could state with a straight face that a bill expanding background checks would have prevented Newtown, when Adam Lanza's mother passed a background check to buy the firearms he stole to commit those murders.  And of course we have a largely dishonest media spouting lies and half-truths to steer a lazy, brain-dead populace too disinterested to do their own homework on an issue, lest they miss whatever mind-numbing reality TV happens to be on.

Speaking of our good buddy Lamar Alexander, did anyone else notice during the Presidentual Inauguration in January who was standing very close to Obama? Non other than our own Alexander. Wonder how he got the invitation to be buddy close? Also, did anyone else see who was directly behind Obama when he was introduced at the State Of The Union Address? The Republican Party's own Eric Cantor. Wonder how Cantor got that invitation? One could wonder how much difference there really is between the two parties. But, they are only looking out for our best intrest, right?

This is correct.

It has been the plan all along since they got so much heat from folks like us over the original Feinstein AWB.

Harry Reid took the slick route by "only allowing what would pass" so they could keep the bill moving, to later add amendments so they can add in what they really want later. The Clinton era AWB was done as an amendment. Don't think it can't happen folks. Just like a lot of you trusted or thought most of the Republican senators wouldn't vote for s649, they still did it and then lie to your face claiming to be pro-2A, pro-gun, etc. It could happen in the house just as easily. When one or two cave, the rest start following like sheep.

Feinstein stated her goal as to ban all hi-cap mags and only allow 10rds, and to ban AW's to dry up the supply of all semi-auto so called assault rifles (the same thing that happened to full auto weapons will happen to semi auto under her plan, no supply, the remaining will be very used and high priced 20 or so years from now).

This is why I gave Corker and Alexander some heat on their FB pages for claiming to be pro-2A and A+ rated by the NRA.

Here are links to all the republicans who voted for s649

The following list of Republican senators voted anti-freedom / anti-gun, joining-in with a whole mess of Democrats ...

And that's the whole problem: centralized government. That has to stop. Manchin can go to Hell for making that

statement. Most everything needs to be done on a more local level. The Constitution and the enumerated rights

that govern those bastards activities have been completely forgotten. Some fool from California doesn't have any

right to legislate what goes on in Tennessee, and vice versa. Our federal government is supposed to be limited:

period, not running everything.

This is like a "B" rated science fiction movie. The Blob!

Even though they voted for cloture, at least it seems they will vote against the final bill....

Of the 16 Republicans who crossed the aisle last week and voted with Democrats to begin a debate on gun control, 10 of them have now formally said they will vote against Manchin-Toomey. They include Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker of Tennessee, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John Hoeven of North Dakota, Jeff Flake of Arizona, and Roger Wicker of Mississippi.

According to the following article the voting will begin Wednesday at 4pm Eastern. Keep up the pressure!!  It's gonna be a close one, Biden sez they're two votes short right now.   No tellin' what kind of arm twisting or favors are going on behind closed doors.

I would reply or paste and copy those emails into a new one with a link to their voting record on this and say," why did you do this? This to me is lying and I will not tolerate this I hope to see you on the campaign trail to bring this betrayal up face to face in front of the voters." Then hit up all his q&a appearances on the next election.

Just sent to Alexander and Corker via Facebook...

If we're going to debate the 2nd Amendment, how about a discussion on term limits? Or would you just rather be voted out, senator?
