Welding lower AK rails near Nashville

Recommended Posts

Anyone near Nashville (prefer north nash) have a setup like a spot welder I can use at your house or your shop to weld in my lower rails? All I have is a flux wire welder and its too hot for thin metal like a receiver. I'm not really in a hurry.

Thanks
Rob

I mig weld mine in. Just plug weld them. Weld, then as fast as you can, or even have someone else help, take an air nozzle from a compressor and blow cool air on the weld to cool it. You can actually watch the high spot from your weld shrink right back into place. Grind your welds smooth and then just a little body filler over the pits and grind marks. Of course I am a body man by trade so it comes easy to me. Also a mig does a nice job with the plug welds. I think flux core wire doesnt quite make as nice of welds. Also make sure you get plenty of penetration into the rails. Can be kind of tricky through small plug weld. Get you some sheet metal scraps and practice some and see if you can get it work. 001-6.jpg

plug welding works, spot welding would give you a more original appearance. When spot welding you have to make sure everything is super clean, then clean it again. Clamp clamp clamp tightly for best results. And it is possible to burn a hole in your receiver with a spot welder, trust me. And make sure your welder's tips are clean, too.
