For cleaning the barrel...

Here at the house I have a can of Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber, and a can of Break Free. Which of those would be best to spray in the barrel and clean it with? Or neither one?

Between those two? Break free for sure.

 

Personally I love Ballistol but I know everyone has their own preferences.

Another balistol guy here but out of the two you own break free.

I think gun scrubber would be for if you had a significant amount of fouling, I've never felt the need for anything that abrasive.

I didn't realize Gun Scrubber was abrasive. I bought it for one cleaning application that was a mess a while back. I will use the Break Free. Thanks, guys.

Abrasive is probably the wrong word... Caustic is probably better?

Or how about just saying "the stuff is strong enough to melt plastic". And keep in mind, I don't use the stuff so that's all conjecture though it seems to be well founded.


I still use Hoppes as well from time to time, it works but I hate oiling after I clean and balistol or any CLP makes it that much easier. Clean/oil in one step, apply a little grease where needed, wipe it down and I'm done.

Nothing wrong with using the scrubber. Just oil afterward.

If I am not mistaken CLP came along first, for the military, then the company started marking it for civilian use and called it Breakfree. I used it in the Navy, and still do. Only problem I have with it today is that it does not smell as good as it used to. SHUT UP! I cant help it if I like the smell of weird stuff (like Hoppe's #9 too).

I kinda like the smell of Hoppe's #9, and I like cleaning with it, but I made the mistake of coming inside the house with it one day...let's just leave it at my wife didn't like the aroma.

There are very few smells as nostalgic to me as Hoppes #9. That's one of those things that takes me back through the years faster than anything.

For some reason women generally don't like it. They're just wierd I guess.

Yeah, I have to do my cleaning in the garage and she still swears she can smell it in the bedroom.  I just tell her it's the true smell of a man.

yep something like that, army went from the 2 green bottles. 1 was lube and the other a cleaner, no more sovlent tanks. the black bottles said break free on them.

Both products are good.  Buy cheap break cleaner at the car parts store.  It's the same product as winchester gun cleaner and cost 3 bucks.  And as the guy before me said.  Oil the gun afterwords.  Alway's oil the gun.

Ya may want to pick up a can of Kroil Penetrating Oil (...i would get the can, not the spray ....im cheap!!....) the next time ya see any.  Ive used it on pistols, revolvers, and rifles for several years.  Swab the barrel withthe Kroil and let it sit.  After several hours, swab it out with a dry patch and oil the barrel down.  Kroil is just a high quality kerosene (...i think...) marketed as a "penetrating oil"; with it does very well.  It will lift any lead type deposits out of a barrel as well as anything ive used.  I use kroil to clean and CLP to oil the barrels down in all our firearms.
