The lawsuit, filed in Chancery Court recently, asks AOL to produce all information related to the identity of an e-mail address linked to MPD Enforcer 2.0, a blog popular with cops that has been extremely critical of police leadership at 201 Poplar Ave.

The lawsuit seeks any and all information related to the creation of the e-mail account, any billing or payment records dealing with the account and any names, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers or addresses associated with the site.

Much of the case has been sealed by Chancellor Kenny Armstrong.

“Larry Godwin has subpoenaed AOL over an attempt to obtain the identities of the blog operators,†the anonymous bloggers wrote.

“In what could be a landmark case of privacy and the 1st Amendment, Godwin has illegally used his position and the City of Memphis as a ram to ruin the Constitution of the United States,†said the bloggers, who operate under the name of Dirk Diggler. “Some members of the Enforcer 2.0 have contacted their attorneys and we are in the process of filing a lawsuit against Larry and the City of Memphis. What's wrong Larry? The truth hurt?â€

City and police officials were not immediately available for comment.

Apparently, Director Godwin forgets a little thing about the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press. I guess next he will forget about the 2nd amendment. Oh wait, he already has.

This has happened in about a dozen cities, large and small, over the last few years.

If the department can't allege liable or slander, they have no business discovering the blogger's identity. Without a viable lawsuit, the only reason they would want this information would be to send a few officers to his doorstep to say "we know who you are".

Godwin's just a Willie puppet like all the rest of the bogus appointed positions in memphis. They'd be dragging memphians out of their houses and shooting them execution style in the middle of the night for bad mouthing Willie if they thought they could get away with it. "Shaking off the haters" old school style if you will.

Dixie,

You know it is headed your way right? Codova used to be a really nice place to live (28 years ago) but now, I avoid it like the plague.

The way Memphis incorporates, it will be short order before you are in the city! I grew up in South East Shelby Co and no one thought city limits would stretch there 20 years ago. They are even trying to argue tax rights on people who live across the border in Mississippi! Who would have ever thought Olive Branch/Southaven would be the go to places!

Yah, dunno if it's easy/difficult to incorporate across county lines or not, but when we moved out of Memphis, part of the reason we moved to Arlington was the Lakeland 'buffer' and the fact that Arlington will not ever be incorporated into Memphis.

So nice and peaceful out here...
