Insurance Sales Job Offer Advice

So I thought I'd see if we've got some insurance guys on here and get some thoughts on a possible job opp I've got going. I sent my resume out yesterday for a Farmers Insurance posting and got a call back almost immediately. Spoke with the recruiter and set up an interview for next Wednesday. however, as i'm researching how these things work it seems like it's almost all commission and not a lot of job security which is what Im really looking for. I also read that the recruiters get paid by the head and don't seem to deal with you much after they get you in. This opinion has just been strengthened by the confirmation email I just recieved where the recruiter didn't even get my name right on the greeting. Has anyone here had any experiences with this type of thing that they can share?

Are you a licensed agent now? If you are not i am not 100 percent but i think you would have to pay to get it yourself... And yes it is only commissions... If you really want a insurance job go to travelers they are hiring right now... I dont work there but know people that do and is a very good place to work.. They train and pay for everything.. Its base pay plus bonus...

AIG is a good place to work, too.  They essentially sponsor you by matching your (previous) salary until you build up clientele enough to support yourself.

I'm in the employment business.  My dealings with insurance sales jobs is not expansive but I have dealt with several over the years.Some are commission only, some are base plus commmission, some are paid salary while training then commission only...just make sure you know what youre getting into.  SOME, even ones you would think are reputable, expect you to seel policies to your family members and friends and then when you cant sell much beyond that, let you go.  Its not for everyone.  I have seen a few people excel at this and stay in it for years and make a decent living.  Most people, however, in my observations, seem to fail at it.

Thanks for the info everybody. I'll definitely go into it with my eyes open if I even do. The fact that the guy I spoke with can't even get my name right raised a red flag though and he seemed pushy to set up an interview. Since I'm already a banker, I'm pretty sure they just want me for my client list which just isn't gonna happen.

Something else to consider. I was once offered a job with an insurance company and they expected me to do sales calls in person. They said the average agent spent most days driving around to potential customers. They said expect to drive 3-4 hours a day. That is a lot of gas, maintenance as well as wear and tear on your vehicle.
