any M1 carbine guys here?

Recommended Posts

Today, I sheared a lug off the bolt on my Winchester M1 carbine. I was hoping someone in the Middle Tennessee area still has a box of parts, including bolts, as well as headspace guages. If not, any guidance you can provide as to the best way to replace the bolt would be greatly appreciated.

I enjoyed my Winchester carbine just this afternoon, for the first time in a long time.

I feel your pain.  The extractor on my IBM (that I've had since about 12 years old) broke in half a few years ago.  It was a Winchester part.

Might want to head over to the CMP forums and put up a want ad.  I found a new front sight for said IBM there (extractor at a gun show) as the ears had been bubbaed off even before dad gave it to me all those years ago.

There is a guy who shows up at Knoxville shows every couple of months who always has a bunch of carbine parts.  Not sure where he's from but you might be able to find one at the next couple of shows there or I could be on the lookout for you.

Actually, this one is a Winchester reciever, but a Blue Sky Production stamped mixmaster. I just need a bolt, and a way to ensure correct headspace. If you could get the guy's contact info who has the carbine parts, I would really appreciate it.

Luckily, I have what I believe it a "correct" Inland. It is in very good condition, so I prefer shooting the Winchester, as it is very well worn.

Update: I bought a bolt on Ebay. I decided I'd measure the distance from the locking lug to the face of the bolt on the broken bolt, and then the replacement I bought. The new one measured about .001 less than the old one, and would close on a chambered round. I fired it with no ill effects to the gun, me, or the brass, so I suppose I'm good to go without taking the bolt apart.

I also took this opportunity to replace the bolt carrier spring, as it seemed weak. I'm not sure if this contributed to the broken bolt or not, but it surely didn't help.

Thanks for everyone's help. I'm sure glad to have this one back in action.
