Another day at the range with my 22

I posted about my first day at the range (ever) last week in the intro forum. These targets are from today, my second day shooting (ever). I have a Marlin XT22TR (tube fed bolt action 22lr). Stock sights (vnotch/ramp) at 50 yard. Shooting Federal Bulk 36gr HV. Bench rest position using a rolled up towel as the front rest.

Forgive my excitement over mediocre shooting and spending a couple hours at the range. I'm new to the sport and just hitting the 4x8 backer board made me happy last week =)

First Session. Walked up to an almost empty ranged, was already cold, so I hung 6 targets, then went to town.

2nd Session I was just putting down some 'fun' rounds. Not worrying about grouping, not concentrating on breathing, just firing. Tore up this guys face pretty good.

3rd Session I broke out the expensive splash targets (9") so I could see the hits.

4th session I put up a bunch of 4" targets, and shot 5 round groups until I got bored.

Just for giggles I moved over to the 100 yard range and shot one tube (17 rounds). Couldn't spot the results even with my 9x scope (used as a spotting scope) so I had no idea how much drop I was dealing with. Turns out it was about 8-9". This target was hanging below the target I was aiming at. Nice grouping in the top right, too bad it was that far off.

As a side note, nothing too scary at Cooper Prentice today. Did have a couple idiots shooting pistols, but thats it. I was firing away, finished a tube (17 shots), and glanced to the side, to see two guys had wandered out onto the pistol range to change targets. No cold range, never checked with me, nothing, just walked out. Thankfully they left after not too long.

Which reminded me that I want to find out about joining Cleveland Hunting Rifle and Pistol Club. Even on a good day Prentice Cooper is borderline scary. And its closed for all of april!

Yeah, depends on ammo, just about always 6" min from 50 to 100.

If you scope the Marlin a decent little trick with .22lr is, zero the scope at 50 yards at center of crosshairs +. . Then on most scopes, use the ^ on the bottom of the vertical crosshair, where it first fattens up to the larger bar width, and you'll be purt close at 100 yards.

But that's all just dandy with open sights, man, and plain to see you're enjoying yourself, too. :)

I hope you had a buddy riding shotgun while you were shooting, 22 ammo is like gold.  If your back is turn for one mininute, those pesty butterfinger gun range pick pocketers can rip your 22 ammo from you in seconds!    Seriously, good with iron sights and your 2nd outing.

You've got some good groups there for open sites @ 50 yards. Congrats!

I used to shoot at PC.....had some nervous moments up there with some of the people that showed up there at times. I saw one guy drive up on a harley, get off and walk halfway down the rifle range and just started shooting a wheel gun with Girlfriend standing behind him.  He shot about 20 times and left. Another time, my wife and I were at the pistol range at the last two tables. A group that consisted of Paw, Maw, 3 kids under 15 I'd say, mamaw and grampaw. Paw laid out about 3 pistols and 2 or 3 rifles.  The kids were grabbing pistols and fuss'n over who was gonna shoot what and pointing them every which way. Nobody said a word to them.  We packed up and got the heck outta there. Probably what the whole show was about anyway. Get'n us to leave. That' was our last trip. We joined a rifle club and it's much more sane.
