Any place in or around Knoxville where a person could take some basic adult ed style machine shop classes. Would love to take a 6-8 week course on how lathes and mills work, basic set up etc. Have been looking online and cant seem to find anything. I kinda thought a lot of high schools offered adult night classes for a fee for such things but cant find anything on Knox County Schools website either.

I know that the University of Tennessee offers a variety of what are called "non credit classes" which give basic information on a subject.  Not sure if they have one on machine work but it would be worth checking out.  Most colleges, especially state schools offer these, pretty sure Pellissippi State does as well.

When I first got out of HS, I took 2 years of engineering classes at TTU. My favorites were the 2 Industrial technology classes. We got to make a bench vise from raw steel to finished product. It was freakin awesome, especially turning threads on a lathe and milling the parts. I'd love refresh my brain on this stuff, but then I'd want to buy a lathe and a milling machine.

Does Oak Ridge still have that TAT training? I remember it from years ago. May be named something else

now.

Are you trying to start a career or just learn some basic skills for personal use?

Personal use. Am way to late to start aver with another career. I am just sick and tired at being at the mercy of others when it comes to basic mill work. Would like to eventually find a nice used lathe but want to be able to have the basic skills to use it and then learn from there.

Sounds like the Tennessee Technology Centers in your area is the best bet.  I took some night welding courses many years ago in one for the same reasons.  Call or email the director if no night courses are currently offered, each center offers those when demand is high enough to warrant a class.

I started at the bottom at a local machine shop but i am transitioning into a second career for after I retire from the military.

I did work for free at a shop that builds custom cars and they had a lathe and mill that I was able to use so theres an idea if you can't find a school that works.

I work for a Hot Rod Shop, unfortunately we have no mill or lathe. Have also looked at websites for TNTech and Pellisipsi. Dont find any mention of evening classes. perhaps I am not looking at right places on webisites. Guess I will have to call and ask.

I know the head of the blacksmithing program out there and I can give him a call or go hunt him down one day.
