Forgot Primer

Hey, so this is a stupid question guys. Can I install a primer into a casing thats already been charged, bullet seated, and crimped? lol I just made a batch of .38 spl and I guess I forgot to prime this one, lol. I'm sure some powder fell out in the process but I'm using Unique so probably not much. I found 8 flakes in the tray. Didn't find any on or by the press. I guess the question now is, what do I do? lol..... I really don't want to buy a bullet puller.

go buy a bullet puller.  you need one around when you reload.

If you acidentally discharge the primer while you're seating it, the powder charge is gonna add to the excitement. Get you one of those plastic hammer pullers. You need one anyway

I've had the same problem before and the same inclination to prime but have resisted. Its not worth it. I have pulled bullets by using a pair of dikes on the top of the press with die removed. If you're careful you can probably remove the bullet without too much damage

I would not risk it. All it takes is a squib to blow the gun up.

Pitch it. How bad do you really need ONE round of 38 special.
If its part of dedicated lot of brass tear it down and start over.

Buy the bullet puller. This may be the first time you need one, but it likely won't be the last. Kinetic bullet puller=the handloader's eraser.

Haul your dud's over here to my house (in La Vergne) and I will be happy to let you use my hammer. Incidentally, I bought an RCBS brand kinetic bullet puller and it broke not long ago and RCBS replaced it (it was 2 or 3 years old)!

is bad idea.  Odds of setting off a primer by jacking it in anyway are approximately 0.  Odds of a good amount of the powder having fallen thru the primer hole and making a squib or useless round: above average?   At least, um, the time or two I did this, powder went everywhere....

Should be able to pull one bullet with pliers, unless you used a heavy roll crimp.. I've put a cartridge in the press, no die, grasped the bullet from the top with pliers, and used the ram to pull the case off the bullet. If you pad the plier jaws with tape, you might even salvage the bullet.

 

Don't even try to prim a loaded case, unless you want to live in infamy on You Tube!

so go buy your missing puller mine is blue you keep loading you will need it

Absolutes my friend the round is either absolutely right or ABSOLUTELY effing WRONG  "guess so, should be, probably" will only damage your gear or hurt you or worse yet someone else and you would have to live with it..

 

FWIW the .38SPL is 17,000 to 20,000 PSI compared to a car tire of maybe 32-44 PSI I prefer to be absolute when working with that and higher (rifle) pressure.

Well I'm shooting out of a .357 mag but I understand what you mean. I've just started a special box of effed up rounds that need to be pulled apart so someday when I can get myself to buy a puller, I'll be set to go....

Kinetic pullers are $15 - $20. No firearms enthusiast especially reloaders should be without one.

I'll get one in due time. For now, I don't mind stocking a reject pile. Like Caster said, they're just bullets. I can live without them for a while. I appreciate all of the responses.
