Reloading 308, Crimp or Not Crimp Bullets

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am accumulating components to reload 308 for FNAR 308 rifle. I plan on using once fired Nato brass, IMR4895 powder, Winchester large rifle primers, and Serria 168g Master KIng BT bullets. Do I factory crimp bullets after seating are do I not crimp? I know an uncrimped bullet is more accurate per literature but mostly shot in bolt action rifles. Since the FNAR is semi-automatic and magazine feed should I crimp bullets to be more secure? Your experience in this loading would be appreciated. Thanks

It would probably be a good idea to crimp the bullets in place. They can be pushed into the case a little deeper and than can raise pressures some. I don't have a auto .308, just bolts and I don't crimp but, if I had a auto definately. Happy shootin'.

I reload .308 for my semi rifles, put a crimp on them.

It will keep them from getting knocked in to far or out to far.

For a bolt action, I don't like to crimp. I've been reloading for a semi auto now and I notice that without a crimp, when chambering, the bullet move forward of the case.   (so one way to test it is to load a dummy round, put dummy in magazine and work the action to see if the force pushes your bullet forward (don't want).   I've since put a very slight crimp on reloads for a semi-auto and that holds it in place.

Not related to the question but as a suggestion, I'd give Varget and Surplus Long Range Match (like RE15) a try.  My 308s love that powder.  =)
