Moving to Knoxville

Well the good news is I've accepted a great job in West Knoxville, The bad news is I can't find any reasonable housing. I am trying to find something on the west end or the north end. I don't know Knoxville real well but somewhat. Everything I can find is priced outrageous. I currently have a 2 bed 1 bath house and pay $450 a month. I expected Knoxville to be a little higher but $1250 a month for a comparable house?

What I have to have:

  • Pet friendly & Pet safe: I have an English Bulldog that I love dearly.
  • Within 25 minutes of West town area.
  • Safe neighborhood for my family.
  • <$1000
  • Don't want any of those places that won't let you have your firearms. Won't happen. (as if i need  to even say that on this site)

What I would like to have:

  • House not apartment.
  • Garage/carport, some sort of parking for the jeep when the tops off.
  • Possibly a rent to own/lease purchase home.
  • <$700

As I said I don't know Knoxville real well and don't know the safest areas. I have seen some houses that would fall into the price range but they are around east Knox or South.

I have been using Craigslist, Trulia, Zillow, and Knox news to search.

Any ideas for searching or areas I should look for or stay away from?

Stay the hell out of East Knoxville is the only advice I can give you.

Yes, I live in East Knox, not a consideration if you have children.  I don't think that there is a bad part of West Knox.  Most of South Knox is decent as well.  West Knox will be a little pricey but I still think that you should be able to find what you are looking for for under $1000 per month.

$1200 seems a bit high. I own a few rentals (all occupied or undergoing remodeling currently) in Oak Ridge, and I would rent a 2/1 house in excellent shape for about $650. You might try contacting a Realtor  a lot of them manage rentals for the house owner that doesn't want the hassle of being a landlord. Some  landlords also commission with a Realtor to find them tenants.

You won't find a house in West Knox for under $1000 a month.

Look to North Knox, Powell, Emory Road area, Oak Ridge Highway, Karns. Part of that is technically West, but Knoxville likes to rotate the compass 90*. East is really North, South is really West, etc...

stay out of Lonsdale hood.

Clinton/Lake City/Oliver Springs will add 10-15 minutes to the drive, but rent is cheaper.  Don't forget Lenoir City NW area (away from waterfronts)

I can recommend Holston Hills and Orchid Hills areas. Technically it is East Knoxville. However I live here for 2 years and never had any troubles.

Clean air, calm streets, not much of a traffic. I also have wonderful neighbours.

I believe couple houses on Brooks avenue are for rent now. The price should be very reasonable. I would not however move anywhere close to Magnolia avenue or Mormingside.

Think I may have found one or two in north Knoxville, Looked at one today that was ok but I'm second on the list if the first guy decides not to take it. They are both off of broadway near 640. Seemed like a decent neighborhood.

Check Lenoir City, it's only 15-20 minutes from West Knoxville. I would probably avoid North Knoxville but that's just me.

I had the same issue when we moved here.  Housing is pricey.  I couldn't find a decent house that would allow my dog for under $1000.  I ended up in a condo for $950 until we could purchase a house.  I'd also look more toward Oak Ridge or Lenoir City.

That is still East Knoxville, remember North on a map is called East. East on a Map is South. South on a Map is West, and West on a map is North. Confusing, but you get used to it.

Found a place in West Knoxville and in my wanted price range. Didn't really want a condo but after looking at one it was 10 times nicer than any house I had looked at. Thanks for all the help and suggestions  Now to find the closest range  :)

Indoor range at Lovell Rd called Coal Creek, it's sufficient.

If you do a lot of shooting Oak Ridge Shooting Association is a must join!

You have chosen wisely.  Traffic sucks out west but then again it does all over town.

I like to bitch about it sometimes but in perspective it's really not bad at all.
