308 vs 30-06 Lee Factory Crimp Die

Recommended Posts

Is there a difference in these two calibers for factory crimp? I have a Lee  30-06 die set that includes a factory crimp die. I bought a Lee 308 deluxe set that does not have a 308 factory crimp die included. I know they list different stock numbers for the different crimp dies but can you use a 30-06 Lee factory crimp die in place of a 308. The bullet dia. is the same. Help!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like about 0.31" difference in case length between them. If you have enough thread on the die, it should work. No harm in trying.

No, I don't believe it will work.  They are length specific.  The collet inside is closed by the pressure of the shellholder.  if you were to use a 308 crimp die on a 30/06 you would not have the base of the ram in contact with the collet before the shell bottomed out.  The other way around and the crimp die wouldn't be anywhere near the case mouth when the ram contacts.
