M&P magazine rattle

Ok, after my M&P lovefest...which still holds btw. I have only one complaint and that is that my M&P 40 magazine rattles when loaded more than about 13 rds. IT appears that one of the bullets is slightly loose in the mag and rattles back and forth. Does anyone else have this problem and/or know how to fix it. I suspect it will need a stronger spring as I took it to my local gunsmith and he said nothing was wrong with it unless the noise bothers me. well, the noise is a bit annoying, so I come to you fine people and ask for ideas....

i just noticed a couple of weeks ago that mine does that as well. i just smacked the back side of the mag into my hand and it stopped. i was not sure if i needed a new spring as well.

A rattling magazine is a common problem with many semi-auto pistols, and many "solutions" have been tried. It has to do with the shape of the magazine, and how the cartridges fit inside. I think unless this is your carry pistol, and you don't want the rattle to give you away, you can just ignore it. It doesn't hurt anything.

We need to find a newer production date M&P 40 and see if the magazines have the stamped ribs in them as the mags from my M&P 9L do. It seems that my mags don't rattle at all and I suspect those ribs help stabilize the rounds inside the tube.

I saw another 9mm M&P and it had the ribs on the mag. I am wondering if it is just a 9mm thing or an improvement on the original design for all cals?

Do all the folks with 9mms have ribs on the mags or only folks with newer mags? Question open to the everyone not just Tungsten.

This is an issue that has been around for ages. I've had it with everything from High-Powers to M&Ps. It happens when the rounds do not "stage" evenly in the magazine causing uneven pressure. Just tap the magazine to align the rounds and problem solved.

Thanks for the feedback. The problem is the same with both magazines that I have. I have tried to tap and even bang the bottom of the mag to get the rounds tight and it only sometimes works and when it does work, only for a little bit. It is also a pretty loud rattle especialy for a carry gun (which I use it for) which makes me think it is a worse problem that what is customary for semi-autos. I have never had any rattle, much less a loud rattle, in any other gun I have owned. (G27, XDsc, Bersa .380, and Witness .40)

My 40c does it on all 5 mags, most of the time tapping worked, but now I just change the way I load it, I load 6rds, tap, load the remaining, tap...no issue.

If i have one round out of my g19 mag, as in load one in the chamber with 14 left in the mag, it sounds like 1 round is bouncing forward and back. Only with that 1 round and only with 14 in the mag.

Perfect reason to carry +1 at all times.

sounds like you might have a bad mag. i have a G-19 and i just trid what you said and no bouncing forward and back on any of mine. sounds like bad spring

None of my Glock 19's mags make a peep.

well out of the millions and millions of mags Glock makes i guess theirs bound to be 1 or 2 bad ones out there

+1. Most of my Glock mags in all calibers are notorious for that. Just tap the bottom of your mag on a table or something and they should seat properly. If it feeds fine (and Im guessing it does), I wouldn't worry about it.

I know my 92 does the same thing. Tapping the bottom always help.
