Wine Sold In Grocery Stores.....And Maybe High Gravity Beer?

Another odd law is that liquor stores can only sell liquor. They can't sell anything non alcoholic such as limes or other drink condiments.

At the liquor stores here in Florida they sell cigars, limes, sour mix etc. It's really convenient if I'm in a hurry.

Stuff like this in TN piss me off. Another law where the government is dictating something they shouldn't be.

If we opened up wine and high octane beer sales beyond liquor stores, the under-the-table money to get a liquor license would drop dramatically.

I'm not much of a wine or liquor drinker but I do like a good beer. I live 3 miles from the Virginia border and just 5 miles to the first grocery store across the line. And it amazes me how much better the beer selection is over there compared to what we have here. There is a tremendous amount of GREAT beer that becomes available when you get to the 6.5% to 8% ABV content, and at grocery store prices it's even better.

I'm right there with you with GA.

I wonder how much money these liquor stores are loosing due to customers going to surrounding states. Heck, wasn't that the reason TN passed the lottery?

Regardless of what happens I will not change my shopping habits. I have a decent relationship with a fairly knowledgeable guy at my local liquor store. He even recognized my wife when she called to ask a question. It's a lot easier to drop a good bit of dough on a bottle when you know you're getting service based on what you like rather than somebody who hardly knows there even IS a wine section let alone the difference between northern Italian wines and Napa Valley wines.

Yeah hell, everybody knows Napa Valley is way down south in Italy, below Naples.

Right now, I am not for this, as I believe it will hurt the small mom and pop liquor stores.

However if they do this, then liquor stores should be allowed to sell beer I guess.

Right now, I like the liquor store I use in Oak Ridge and I will continue to shop their and I do not plan on buying wine as a grocery store.

I grew up in West Virginia, it was common place that every grocery store had a wine isle. Seems silly to me that this is such a big deal here.

Liquor stores just need to adjust their business plan a little, they'll be fine.

I grew up in Louisiana, so I was always used to walking into Walmart or whatever local grocery store and buying not just wine, but any liquor you were looking for. Not being allowed to sell them in grocery stores always seemed silly to me also once I got here.

I know in Louisiana there are a lot of "tobacco" shops, much more of those than there are dedicated liquor stores in fact.
