Cut Birdshot shells = Slug?

What do yall think about this video? Anybody done it before? Obviously you wouldn't want to do this with a choke gun. I've got a single shot break open 20 gauge I want to try this with.

I have made a lot of their wax slugs. Never done the cut shell but I will try it next time I have a shotgun out.

Cause a 25 round box of birdshot is about $6 and some people are just cheap.

I cut the tops off of the cheap birdshot shells. Melt the shot into slugs then drop the slugs back in where the birdshot was. Makes for cheap slugs that don't pound my shoulder. They are also reasonably accurate  especially for .25 each.

They do work and do a lot of damage. I would recommend single shots only because some problems can come up. Wax slugs are definitely superior to the cutshell though

Yep, did cut shells, dont care for it, have to single shot the round.

Melted wax and added shot to make a wax slug, much better load.

As Dolomite said, I have a BUNCH of melted shot into slug, great load,

good out to 100 yrds, come on ZAMBIES!!!

Did this about 30 years ago when a groundhog came out while hunting doves...cut it, and slid it in the chamber of my 870. The slug worked, the shooter didn't...missed the groundhog, and he stayed in his hole after that until I was long gone.

 

It works in a pinch, especially useful during certain seasons like in Ky, where you cannot legally possess a slug while hunting ...like ducks, doves, etc., definitely an old McGyver trick...er, no...he didn't use guns...wuss... :rofl:

They work pretty good and are fun to experiment with to see what kind of damage they do. You can just pull the choke out and shoot these without a choke. It will not mess up the threads on your barrel.

I tried the cut shells last fall. They worked great. Relatively accurate out to 50 yards-ish. Not all of them stayed together that far, some tended to tumble and become shot again. But at 20 - 30 yds, they are awesome as slugs. Lots of cheap fun.

I put one in a side by side shooting skeet one time. My friend who was wanting to shoot it didn't find it funny, but he actually nicked the clay with it.

Anyway they work okay for some stuff. Armadillos were a favorite target back in MS.

Are you guys saying you melt the bird shot and just pour it back in the shell, or are you using a mold of some type? Either way that is awesome!

you dump the shot out in hot wax then scoop the mixed shot and wax back into the shell and let it dry.

Supposedly you can inject hot wax in with a stout hypodermic needle too (?). 

 

I have also heard of injecting the shot with a thin oil, which holds it together to make a very tight shot pattern (still just shot).

Yes but make sure the shot and wax are below the hull.

I have probably made 300 of these in the last year or so. I have even made pure wax slugs. They have no recoil and act like slugs.

I would never use them for defense but for other stuff it is useful. It puts a clean hole in one side of a cardboard box and a much larger hole in the other side.

O.K. I was confused I thought Dolomite said he was melting down the lead and making a slug.

 

I have often wondered if you could load buckshot into low brass for a low recoil HD type round.
