Map of States Right to Carry since 1986

Recommended Posts

I do get a warm fuzzy every time I see this graphic. At least it shows that there have been advances in gun rights despite several set backs and repeated assaults from the left. Would be nice to see TN as an unrestricted state.

I find it odd that the grabbers are screaming about the people in the south clinging to their guns, yet if you look at the map, it shows that the northern and western states, for the most part, were May Issue and Shall Issue states while most of the south and mid-west was bathed in red with No Issue until 1995.

Yes, it may have been technically illegal to carry in some of those 'no issue' states, it was culturally OK at the time to carry 'illegally'.  The police looked the other way.

Because of Jim Crow firearms laws all over the south, same as discussed in this thread:

It was ok to carry "illegally" as long as you weren't the wrong shade or were not involved in helping those of the wrong shade.

Some of the map info is incorrect though.

Alabama is technically a "may issue" state, and has been for some time. Permits are issued at the discretion of each county sheriff. Even so, most counties just take your money and give you a permit if you dont' have a "record" or rap sheet.
