Some very intersting stats as to why there is a ammo shortage

I pulled this from another website. It is very telling and a good indication as to what is going on. I don't think people are hoarding ammo, like I thought, I think people are buying ammo for the guns they are purchasing.

At some point the powers that be must realize that we are a substantial force. And rather than alienate us they might try catering to us if they want to remain in power.

Look at that number, 42% of all background checks were done since Obama took office. Since becoming president over 20% of the US population has bought a gun. The Monday following Newtown almost 1 million backgrounds were completed in a single day. And remember a person could have bought several guns for each background check.

http://forum.saiga-12.com/index.php?/topic/86058-back-ground-checks-no-ammo-right-now/

Here is some information that tells me that most of this ammo shortage has come from people buying guns. If we figure that most of these background checks would result in a gun being purchaced. Then ammo and mag shortages would follow respectfuly.
February 2013 was the third highest month on record for background checks on Americans' purchasing firearms.
According to the FBI NICS database, there were 2,309,393 background checks completed in the month of February.
The only two months that saw a higher number of NICS checks were January 2013, with 2,495,440, and December of 2012, with 2,783,765.
The total number of background checks completed since November of 1998 (the month the FBI began tracking this information) is 165,279,535.
President Barack Obama, dubbed "The greatest gun salesman in history," has presided over 42 percent of these background checks, or a total of 68,898,629.
Also, the top ten highest days and weeks for background checks completed have occurred during Obama's presidency:
Top Ten Days:
Dec. 21, 2012, 177,170
Dec. 20, 2012, 159,604
Nov. 23, 2012, 154,873
Dec. 22, 2012, 153,697
Dec. 19, 2012, 153,672
Dec. 18, 2012, 134,691
Nov. 25, 2011, 129,166
Dec. 15, 2012, 128,823
Dec. 14, 2012, 113,022
Feb. 15, 2013, 112,650

Top Ten Weeks:
12/17/2012 - 12/23/2012, 953,613
01/14/2013 - 01/20/2013, 641,501
02/11/2013 - 02/17/2013, 618,361
01/07/2013 - 01/13/2013, 603,882
12/10/2012 - 12/16/2012, 602,003
02/04/2013 - 02/10/2013, 592,542
02/25/2013 - 03/03/2013, 565,699
02/18/2013 - 02/24/2013, 543,259
01/21/2013 - 01/27/2013, 541,822
12/03/2012 - 12/09/2012, 527,095
As longe as this man is president we can expect a shortage in all areas.
Hang in there.

Dolomite,

There you go again, presenting a logical idea and fact. Now you are going to upset the balance. What are all the haters, gougers, conspiracy theorist , tin foil hat wearers and hoarders going to talk about.

but probably 75% of that 20% of america were already gun owners, not first timers.   When you are buying your 27th rifle, its no longer really arming america unless you plan to be charitable when the end of the world comes (?).

There are a ton of new gun owners, yes, but of all those sold, how many were bought to flip (AR flipping), how many bought by panicky gun nuts, etc?  Its not possible to say, but just looking on the boards here, every day someone here got a new toy.

I have my own theory, I don't have any facts to back it up, other than maybe what your stats might show. People who normally don't shoot or hunt or buy ammo are out buying it up. I've witnessed it several times when out looking for ammo the past couple of months. All those gun purchases aren't just long time shooters, I would guess a huge part where first time gun purchases. I've witnessed and talked to people buying ammo who are horribly uneducated in firearms and the ammo they were buying.

This is only my opinion, but I'm curious if any of you guys are seeing the same stuff.

Either way I'm sick of this ammo crunch, for lack of a better term, I wish things would level out.

My theroy is the theory of all of it.  Meaning, its a sum of a variety of issues.

long time but casual shooters who never stockpiled ammo suddenly have realized the sense in doing so.

+ prepping has become mainstream.

+ jerks are buying ammo by the case to make a quick buck on ebay.

+ new gun owners are buying ammo for their new guns

+ opressive govt has long time preppers and shooters buying too

Yep. This could all turn out to be a good thing. It may just get A LOT of bad politicians fired.

i see a lot of people buying huge quatities of ammo out of fear that they won't be able to get it when they want/need it. I know guys that at the rate they shoot will have enough .223 to last a lifetime. These same people used to just drop buy Walmart and buy 50 or 100 rounds on the way to the range.

Id like to see the ammo situation after 3 months of zero gun talk from the media. The doom and gloom talk makes people panic and buy guns and ammo.

I find it humorous that the last 2 times I was at Walmart the only pistol ammo I saw was .25 acp. Where I came from, that's the kind of ammo the criminals needed for the guns they carried.

Nice stats,so if we had  68,898,629. background checks and 5 % failed leaving 65,453698 purchased, w no one showing up at the range,no ammo on the shelfs cept 7 mm and 30-06,my question is,how long before the hoarders start dumping when bamanomics kick in? ( again) time for new deals!!! Ill bet 223 will drop back to 375.00 per thousand pretty soon and a lot of black rifles and gear pop up faster than hadji in fallujah or whack a moles at chuckey cheese!!! If hoarders start dumping ammo the shelves should replenish pretty quick   :usa:

Based on NICS checks won't get to the entire story, but it does show where demand went through the

roof on an already increasing market demand. If you will recall, ever since late 2008, this man has spurred

sales of all firearms. Newtown was just the latest tick upwards.

Well we knew what is going on, if the time comes and we do "need" to share we will.

You know you will, you might not say so here, I will.

I share your sentiment. That is, with the people I can connect up with. Awful lot of uncertainty out there, though.

For those who are wondering:
Obama has been president for 27.1% of the time the background checks have been in place.
