I have a gen 2 glock 19, it needs a new recoil spring. The question is can I put a gen 3 captured style spring assembly in it?

Yes gen 2 and 3 19 uses the same replacement captive recoil spring

The recoil spring part number that you need is SP02457.  If your trigger bar is black instead of silver your 19 has not ever been upgraded.  Most 2nd gen GLOCKs were subject to a six part upgrade.  See more about it here: http://www.thegunzone.com/glock/upgrade-faq.html#nb0 

 

You might want to consider sending it to GLOCK to have the upgrades performed.  They will also replace all of the parts in the pistol (except frame, slide and barrel of course) and if you send your magazines with it they will also replace those with the latest design.
