My "other" evil black rifle project... purpose built .22LR AR15

I had the distinct pleasure of introducing my lovely wife to the world of firearms and it's turned out that not only is she a great shot and a fast learner but also easy to shop for. Basically the rules for success are (1.) it has to be a badass weapon and (2.) it has to incorporate the color pink in it somewhere. :D

When I picked up the lower receiver for my AR15 short barrel rifle project, I bought a second receiver to be kept non-NFA. While it may eventually have a 5.56mm upper built for it as well, more immediately I am going to use it to build a .22LR AR15 weapon platform.

This rifle will use a lot of parts I already have handy as well as a few things that we'll have to order. I'm hoping to have it done by the end of the year. :)

  • CMMG lower receiver
  • DPMS lower parts kit
  • Commercial spec M4 collapsible stock in PINK Duracoat
  • M4 spec plastic 2-piece forearm in PINK Duracoat
  • TangoDown Ergo Grip in PINK Duracoat
  • M4 spec upper receiver
  • Tactical Solutions .22LR stainless bolt carrier group
  • Tactical Solutions 16-inch M4 profile barrel 4140 stainless
  • Millet DMS-1 scope
  • BlackDog Machine .22LR AR15 magazines

Here are some pictures of the Tactical Solutions .22LR stuff from G&R Tactical's web site. It's very slick.

That is one of the better looking .22 AR's I've seen. I can't stand the little .22 mags hanging out the magwell. Makes them look weird IMO. That looks nice. Just too bad it has to be ruined with pink!

BCG and barrel are running $430-450 depending on reseller. The rest of it's pretty much cookie cutter AR15. :D

Let me know when you're ready. I think I can make it happen.

I've got the pink Duracoat supplies at the house but I'd love to hear any prep or equipment recommendations that you might care to share for successfully painting the plastics.

That looks great, btw. Exactly what I had in mind. :D

One of the biggest "tricks" with the prep is not ruining the furniture with the acetone when you're rubbing it down.

I was hoping that I could use some non-chlorinated parts cleaner to spray the parts down and allow them to drip dry rather than risk touching the plastics while they might be somewhat softened by the acetone. Would this stand a decent chance of working?

That might work. Coating parts, and getting an even finish that will wear well is very tough because prep is about 80% of it.

Thought I remember someone mentioning the 91% Isopropyl Alcohol as a cleaner/prep agent? Maybe?

You can prep it with anything you like. The trick is getting the coating to stick to the material and stay there for more than a week.

Yeah, I was just referring to something that would clean the plastic pieces without eating away at them. Wasn't sure if that was a viable option or not. Thought I read somewhere that it was safe to use on plastic, and the plus of it drying/evaporating quickly without leaving any residue.

I totally agree on what you're saying.

Prepping the 'plastic' is always going to be a pain since most DIY jobs are going to be air cured and subject to household debris and cost considerations.

Even with commercial applications it's going to be a crap shoot 9 out of 10 times since heating to the required temps will end in heartache and sadness depending on how the plastic makers felt the day the furniture was made, some are softer than others.

We use a variety of agents to clean and prep furniture and other non-metallic parts and have come up with various tricks and voodoo depending on which way the wind is blowing with each specific problem that pops up.

Not to sound like an ass, but with most thermal coatings done at home, the key is to get it as close to what you want it to be and enjoy it. And remember that no matter how much time and effort you put in to the job it's going to fade and flake off with use and you're going end up having to spray it again in a year, give or take.

Yep, same exact thing I've read in all of the "Painted AR" threads. That seems to be why most people just go with the Rustoleum, Krylon, or any of the other paints you can snag from Brownells/WalMart/etc... and then ultra matte clear coat it. Wear is inevitable, and it's only a matter of time and use before it needs touched up again.

Bet its gonna be allot cheaper to shoot it in .22LR than 5.56. Ammo is going up in price, can't decide if I want to shoot this weekend or fill up my truck...

That depends... do you enjoy road marches that much?

That's what I did for my rifle... I went to a hobby store and got the specific colors I wanted for a faux-MARPAT job, and finished the job off with several coats of matte clear. It's been toted through the woods hunting quite a few times, and is holding up OK so far.

I can fly a kite in... that work? I really need to change my avatar, as my DOS was 2 weeks ago. I'm officially a civilian again (aside from those 2 yrs of inactive commitment). :)
