Turkey calling

Does anyone know of a good resource to learn how to use a mouth call. I can get noise but it doesn't sound turkey like. I've looked on YouTube and some other places but nothing has helped so far.

Your talking about a diaphragm call right? If so, put i about halfway back in your mouth and hold it to the roof with your tongue. Place the tip of tounge lightly against reeds and say CHUCK  or CHICK that will get you a yelp. Drop your jaw when you do it and get a little volume. Do the same thing and say PUCK nad that should get a cluck. Main thing is just experiment some.

Have you tried a McDonald's stirring stick ? (seriously). Use it just like a wingbone call.

I'll have to try that. But, I really want to learn the mouth call so I can have both hands free.

Never heard of that. Sounds like a neat trick. I have took a Bic or similar pen apart and made a wingbone type call.

I've heard Scott Ellis's Mouth Call Magic is pretty good. Dude works for Woodhaven and knows his stuff.

Keep trying you'll get it.

Put the mouth call in right against the roof where your upper palate goes from shallow to deep. Apply pressure with your tongue, pretty firm. Don't breathe from deep in your lungs rather use short throng bursts of air from inside your mouth. Build pressure in your lungs with a good breath but hold it back and force it over your tongue.

Thanks for the advice men. I figured one problem out I did not have the call far enough back in my mouth. Now just a little more experimenting maybe I'll get it down by turkey season.

Try some different brands of calls. I can hardly call on some and I can wear it out on other brands. I gagged a lot when first learning.

Great vids lumber_jack. It helped me. I have always used box and slate calls and never took the time to master the diaphragm. I'm getting the hang of them now though.

They make a mouth call that has a plastic piece and it fits in the roof of your mouth. That may also help you out. I think Primos makes it.

I have one of those. It's a pretty good call. I think it's a little pricier than others but worth it if your struggling to get the right sound.

I have one of the small sized dome mouth calls. I bought it a couple years back and the first day I took it out I got a boss hen so mad with it that she came in and knocked down my decoy.

Thanks again guys.  Lumber Jack thanks for the videos, you have been a tremendous help.  My wife is gonna be so pissed that I learned how to use the call.  i think she was somewhat happy cause I was getting frustrated and giving up within a few minutes.  But, it's on now.

Well I'm glad it was helpful. It was debatable whether or not the video would actually help, but it was easy and worth a shot. I don't see a future in video posting

I pissed a hen off pretty bad one morning too. I had a inflateable hen decoy out and had called aggressively some and she came in all blowed up like a strutting gobbler. She came right up to the deke and started flogging it and pecking it. I was afraid she would puncture it and got up and ran her off.

My wife, my daughter, my secretary, my dogs... They all hate the two months before turkey season. :)
