Schmidt Rubin model K31 or K11 not sure on the model at this time

I was hoping to pick your brains on this rifle (Schmidt Rubin model K31 or K11). I have found one for sale, but do not know anything about them. It looks to be in good condition from the pics. I was hoping to get an estimated value as my books dont go that far back. What I have found so far is that it is an accurate rifle made by the Swedes.

 

I appreciate any useful help that can be given.

Swiss, not Swedes.  Considered one of the finest, most accurate milsurps out there.  They've kind of dried up, though surplus ammo is still available (which is also excellent).  Someone more knowledgeable will be able to tell you the difference between K11s and 31s, but they're both straight pull and I believe they both fire the 7.5mm.

 

I have a K31 and bought it a few years ago for 250.  Prices are probably a good bit more now, maybe 400-ish.

If you like interesting military surplus rifles and it's a good price, get it.  They are really neat.  And ask the seller if the trooper tag is under the buttplate.  If they don't know just get a screwdriver and find out.  And get a few cases of that ammo too, unless you plan on reloading for it.

I paid $325 for my nicely refinished K31 and a couple hundred rounds about 5 years ago.  It's far more accurate than I am.  And yes, the GP11 surplus is essentially "match grade" ammo.  Its definiately a keeper and a good conversation piece.  Lots of people have no idea what they are.

I just found out that it does not have a clip - the seller had stated that one can be found for 50.00? Are they hard to find, and or install? I am pretty capable but I am no gunsmith

If you are referring to the magazine and it is missing, I wouldn't even bother with it.  Walk away.

 

A reproduction magazine will probably run $50-60, an original much more.

That brings down the value of it but these have a detachable magazine, unlike most milsurps like the Mosin Nagant where the mag is fixed.  I guess it's not uncommon on some of those Swiss rifles for the magazine to go missing.  Another thing that makes these rifles unusual is that even though it's detachable, you're supposed to load it top down like the fixed magazine guns.  So don't take it out.  And that way it won't get lost!

 

I'd make sure that the lack of magazine is reflected in the price.

The K31 has a detachable magazine, just like most anything else... AR, AK, etc.  Reproduction mags are available. If the price was appropriate, I wouldn't let that bother me too much.

The asking price was 250.00 and that seems fair. I like to be sure that the rifle can fire, and has been fired. Since I am not familiar with this model and do not know what else to look for, I may just let her go. I appreciate all your advice gents.

$250 does sound like it's priced without the magazine, otherwise current prices for the K31 are generally at least $100 more than that. I'd get it for that price if it appears to function properly except for missing a magazine. They are wonderful rifles.

Thank you for the input - I am actually going to help the guy sell it. He ended up being a friend of a friend and I want to help him get as much as possible. I went and saw it last night, and it was fantastic. No rust, or stock marrings at all, very light useage marks. I need to help him find a magazine now. It has a wood stamp under the buttplate and I grabbed serial numbers as well. I need to see what its worth....and the quest begins...........

K31 is one of my favorite surplus rifles, they are very well made with actions as slick as butter, heavy but crisp triggers, usually are very accurate even with surplus ammunition, unfortunately the supply of both rifles & cheap ammunition has dried up on them but they can occasionally still be found for semi-reasonable prices if you shop around, the missing magazine is kind of problematic & will lower the value a bit, but a replacement can probably be found on one of the auction sites easily enough, I would suggest an original instead of a reproduction, last I heard folks were having trouble with feeding out of the repos but it has been several years since I have owned a K31 so that might have been corrected.

Over-all they are very nice shooters, the 7.5 cartridge is a great hunting & target round, like the .303 it is often over-looked here in the United States but is very popular around the rest of the world, unfortunately about 10 years ago I started thinning out the number of cartridges that I shot and the 7.5 was edged out by the .303 just barely though, it was a hard choice to make but at the time I could still get good Turkish .303 surplus cheap, shame that that dried up a couple years later.

Anyway for $250 it seems priced a bit high for a quick sale, but a knowlegable buyer who wanted to add one to their collection of surplus rifles would probably pay that for one in really good shape even considering that it is missing the original magazine, but your average American "shooter" might not, especially considering how cheap Mosin's & their ammo are at the moment.

Take a look here to get an idea what they are selling for. They are out of the K31s, but they were getting $349 for them. The K11 is in stock for $329. Classic Firearms also had some within the last year for similar pricing.

Time has passed since the original query - alas, I did end up buying the K31 - it has all the markings including under the buttplate.

 

Now, the hunt for a magazine ensues. If anyone has any leads to an original magazine for sale, please let me know. I have not stumbled upon any as of yet.

I have not been able to find this rendition of the rifle as of yet. All of the rifles I have reviewed had a full stock leaving a few inches of barrel exposed. The sniper version had a similar barrel configuration, but the rear sights were not the same at all. This rear sight has increments up to 2000 meters. My quest continues to find a magazine, as well as figure out what model this rifle is.
