Tennessean looking to talk to folks who have been denied on a background check

Read this:

The Public Records and commercially available data sources used on reports have errors.  Data is sometimes entered poorly, processed incorrectly and is generally not free from defect.  This system should not be relied upon as definitively accurate.  Before relying on any data this system supplies, it should be independently verified.   data is for information purposes only and is not an official record.

second:

If you are charged with a crime and are mugged and printed, and found innocent/not guilty etc the charges are usually still in the system as they have to be expunged at the request of the prosecuting agency.

Sometimes no one follows up to make sure expungement's are done correctly and are actually sent in,even after they're paid for. One can be denied because they haven't allowed enough time for something such as a temp order of protection, that was dismissed by the court, to be purged from the system.

That's the most typical. Also,if someone reads an entry and thinks it warrants denial, they will err on the side of caution, leaving the purchaser the option to appeal. The appeal speeds up the determination process as to allow the screener to understand the circumstances behind whatever it was that denied the applicant. I've observed where the courts are actually contacted by TBI to get more information w regard to an appeal.again, bottom line is the appeal usually points the screener handling the appeal in the right direction to make better determination.

Brian's articles are pretty fair for the most part. I've read several. But why is it that he, and seemingly every other journalist on the planet can't write an article without leaving out the fact that an armed civilian stopped a shooting? He mentions the mall shooting in Oregon that claimed two lives. But doesn't mention that the reason it claimed ONLY two lives is because an armed civilian was there. It would be half a sentence added to the article.

Yes I realize this article isn't about civilians stopping shootings but 99.99999999999999999% of the time where a normal every day citizen carrying stops a potential mass shooting there is a deafening silence in the media. You want to be fair? Tell ALL of both sides of the story.

I think the reason we have a higher denial rate than other states is human error..

I see so many spelling errors every day around here ,its insane..

And yes  I cant spell either  ..just saying.. :puke:

Pay attention to billboards and signs around the state..

I apologize for the delay in getting this story in the paper. Just some quirks of scheduling, butting up against breaking news duties.

Here's my story on gun background checks:

I must say it is one of the fairest pices on the fireams debate to be published in the Tennessean, ever.

Thank you.

Was expecting the normal anti-gun ignorance due to the Gannett association, but it was a good article.

Brian, did you check  with anyone at NSSF before running your story?  Funny thing, I talked to their council this morning, and he disagreed  totally with your contention that they, or the people they work for, (Firearm manufacturers and retailers) support "universal background checks".

Just who was your contact there that told you that the idea "picked up key support last week from the National Shooting Sports Foundation"?

Received this from the NSSF today:

Senate to Vote on Firearms-Related Legislation This Week

The U.S. Senate is poised to take up consideration of firearms legislation as early as this week. While Senate leadership is still determining exactly what legislative language to bring to the floor for a vote, we do know Sen. Feinstein (D-Calif.) will offer an amendment to ban modern sporting rifles, the most popular rifles being sold in America, and factory-standard magazines.

Another anti-gun senator, New York's Chuck Schumer, is pushing to require so-called "Universal Background Checks" on all private transfers that the Justice Department says requires national registration and exposes firearms retailers to liability and burdensome and costly record keeping requirements.

Now is the time to for your voice to be heard on Capitol Hill!

Call your U.S. senators at 202-224 3121, and tell them to VOTE NO on Feinstein's gun ban amendment and on any bill that requires "Universal Background Checks

Somehow the statement that they (NSSF) supports the background checks rings hollow, either shows a lack of effort on the part of the writer to vet facts, or a decided effort to push an agenda.
