Ramsey against NRA-backed sealing of carry permits

Recommended Posts

Although Ramsey is making a valid point, in a perfect world, he is still wrong. It's no one's business unless you or I

inform them voluntarily. But that also makes part of the argument against the state having anything to do with you or I

having to prove to the government we are law abiding citizens, in the first place. The information should have never

been available to the media for any reason.

It is true, and when you back out felons, DV convictions and DUI's it's a lot closer to 10% of the eligible population.

From the article:

"More than 390,000 people have obtained handgun carry permits in Tennessee, or about 8 percent of the eligible population."

If true, this is about twice the rate as Texas.

I beat you to it by 10 minutes in General Chat.

Perhaps better discussed in an "on topic" forum, just saying.

Anyway, Ramsey said:

"It allows for a one-name check," Lamberth said. "It doesn't allow for
the entire the entire list to get out there under any circumstance."

However, you can bring up all of the database, alphabetical by name, with just one click.

Also

'Ramsey agreed that "it serves no purpose" for news organizations to post
searchable databases of handgun carry permit holders online.'

Seems these two statements are at odds.

I think Ramsey is dead wrong on this. It would be perfectly acceptable and legal to make the database closed. However, if you open it and disallow the press from publishing it you run a very high risk of it being overturned by the courts on a 1A argument. I personally would believe it to be unconstitutional even though I don't like it. Just close the entire database and you're good-to-go.

Unlike the anti-gun crowd, I don't pick out the parts of the Constitution that I like and try to subvert the rest. I try to see it from it's true meaning and our founding fathers would have never gone for such a suppression of the freedom of the press.

Ron is simply shilling for his campaign donors, Big Business wants to be able to keep a record of all permit holders so they can manage their property, no nefarious intent there. That the results can be horrific are, well, simply collateral damage.  Such is the fate of those not included within the ruling elite.

I don't think it's 'big business' wanting to keep tabs on us...  I think it's political campaigns and gun related businesses that want a free marketing list.  I had a sitting state senator back during the entire CA mess flat out tell me the reason they wouldn't close the HCP database that year was because they wanted to be able to use it for targeted mailings in the next campaign.

And this was a very pro-2A state senator.

I don't know any pro-2nd Amendment State Senators except Mike Bell, please introduce me to the one you know.

Why would any one of them suppose that the electorate (at least ones smart enough to make a passing grade on that simpleton test required to get your permit) is so stupid as to believe anything any of them would have to say at this point?

How about campfield for a very pro 2d senator? Heck isn't this his bill?

I have had my dealings with Stacey, I would not consider him overly amenable to the 2nd Amendment, but my last statement was over the top, Sen. Beavers is pro 2nd Amendment, the rest have failed to raise any hope that they are other than politicians.

And no, this is not Campfield's bill, a new one named Haile.  There may be some other pro 2nd Amendment State Senators, I just don't know them, and I know most, other than freshmen.

Unfortunately he lost his bid for re-election 2010, after being one of the driving forces behind a very pro-2nd bill.  Probably would have been the one democrat I could have voted for, but I didn't live in Dickson.

Note: He is a politician.  He will not limit access to the names and addresses.  This way politicians can use the database to send pointed political advertising, and propaganda, to this specific audience, in an attempt to get elected, or stay in office.  He wants access to use it as a tool to stay in office.
