Just recieved a letter requesting donation for bulletproof vests for police officers from Tn Police Federation. Has anyone had any dealings with them?

I don't mind donating but I just want to know if the money is going for vests or some administrators spring vacation.

thanks

Look here:

http://tnsos.org/charitable/CharitableOrgReports.php?resultpage=602&browse=all

About 1/2 way down the page it lists their financials.

Seems like the last reported year, 2011, they used only 6% of the donations to actually help. 70% went to management costs (read the owner's pocket) and 21% went to fundraising. It looks like all previous years they gave (program services) either 1% or 0% to helping officers. Seems like a great scam and I wonder why he hasn't been arrested.

You could not find a worst place to donate. I would take whatever money you were going to donate and give it to a begger along the road. At least they will appreciate the fact they can get drunk.

Another one I've gotten calls from is the Police Protective Fund and they don't seem to fair any better when looking them up online.

I'd love suggestions for groups that actually get something done and are worth donating too, especially for police, firemen, military.

The Emerald Society and Officer Down are two we've donated to for years in our family. The Emerald Society is pretty cool, especially if your Irish. They've sent pipers to several funeral services of family members. Officer Down doesn't do much in some regards, but they at least so as they claim by creating a memorial for officers fallen in the line of duty. It's kind of hard to go on their page and read more than a few entry's without getting choked up, at least for me.

If you want to help the police, call your local PD or Sheriff and ask them what they need.  You don't need a middle man.
