Got my first SKS

I traded for my first SKS. Its a Yugo with a tacticool Tapco plastic furniture and a Nc Star sniper scope attached. Its the Yugoslavian version that has the attachment at the end of the barrel for the grenade launcher. It has the bayonet attached and came with two 20 round Tapco mags adn the original wood furniture and 100 rounds of ammo.

I read up on it and tested it and it does not slam fire. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

Can anyone with experience with these guns tell me what to expect? Any other problems to look for?

I think the brass is going to hit the scope, there is no shield for the scope. Would it be acceptable for the time being to just put a little adhesive backed padding on the side of the scope to keep the ejecting brass from dinging it up or damaging it?

I look forward to responses.

i have a yugo sks, I like it alot and have never had an issue with it at all. Mine is 100% stock with open sights, so I cant speak on the tapco stock or the scope. Alot of people have that stock and ive never heard of any problems out of it, maybe someone with one on their sks can chime in here and voice there opinion on it. Enjoy it!

Hey, can you put a bi-pod on an SKS?

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. ;)

Seriously though, you can but it may be more trouble than its worth on that one. Unless you can live with one of those clamp around the barrel deals.

Yep, but you'll have to remove the bayonet.

Make sure all the mags feed properly.  Some work, some don't.  Tape on the scope to prevent brass (steel, actually) damage is a good idea.  If the trigger has lots of creep or is gritty, send it to this guy....  you'll be amazed at the difference.  I sure was.

My yugo is stock with the exception of the above trigger job and Tech Sights, both of which I highly recommend.

I didn't have a good experience with that railed reciever cover. There's so much pressure going back against it that I found my scope would never stay true, even the slightest wabble and you're off. They make a mount that fits on the side that doesn't have that problem i'm told. I won't say i've bothered to find out who makes it or the price however.

You could always throw a cheap barska reflex sight or red dot on the front rail though if you wanted to stay with the tacticool look. it won't co-witness but at least it would still feel modern. Some folks frown on spicing up the SKS, but i don't see anything wrong with it. I bought a ton of aftermarket parts for mine but at the end of the day i found that it shot better with its original parts. The removable mags I have work but I even switched back to the 10rnd fixed. it's just balanced better imho.

Oh, i think there is also a bipod that will work on your bayonet lug. Again, not a part that I bought.

I've actually been meaning to pickup that tapco intrafuse stock. When I bought mine probably 10 years ago i bought one of the fiberforce draganov stocks and a converter to let it use AK47 magazines. Worked perfect but it moved the gun about 5-6 inches forward off your shoulder, which made me have to extend my left arm almost fully to support it. There was NO WAY i could hold it at the ready for long. The AK47 mag converter was made especially for that stock so when it went... so did the converter. Real shame, it shot nicely.
