Mossberg 590 Stage 1 - Complete!

Hello everyone! This is my first shotgun that I bought last month, and I have finished what I have called "Stage 1" of mods that I have wanted to do to it as of tonight. The purpose of this shotgun is mainly home defense, with some fun target shooting mixed in. So I set out with trying to keep things simple ( K.I.S.S ! ) 

 

Mossberg 590 9-Shot 

+ Hogue 12" LOP Stock

+ TacStar 6 Round Side Saddle

+ Surefire 623LMG

Edit: Had a friend shave off some of the bayonet lug. I won't be using it so I have no qualms about this. The light bezel no longer barely hits the bottom of the bayonet lug when sending the pump forward.

you may have seen my thread on TGO long guns about my long and exhaustive search for the best way to mount a light on this gun for me....Decided this was the way to go. "Buy once cry once" as they say. It would have been easy to just get a light mount and put on any hand held "tactical" led light, but I wasn't comfortable knowing that these lights weren't rated for the 12ga recoil. I need this light to work always, since I'm defending my home with it. But you're right, it was a pretty penny, but a lot less than retail...thank the monetary gods for internet shopping!

Good point on the crying once thing. What is your sight setup? I have a 500 with a rail on top that makes the gun next to impossible to shoot properly without a sight on top. Not really sure what I want to do with it yet.

The sight is just a plain bead at the front. I'm going to shoot it A LOT more like this and decide if I ever want to change....even then, I'll probably just get one of those Mepro tritium front beads or something similar. 

 

 

Also, part of me wants to go with a small rail on top of the receive and a Trijicon RMR or another small form-factor red dot ....we'll see that v2.0 brings...haha. Don't want to start throwing all kinds of stuff on it.

Nice shotty, I'm uber jealous of your surefire forend. Sucks about the bayonet lug, do you know anyone who could machine it down a little? I would imagine you could shave a little off and have it still work. I've been shooting mine a lot recently since 12 gauge birdshot is still available and prices haven't skyrocketed. I'm gonna try the nebo light on mine and give it hell, and if it doesn't hold up I'll upgrade to a surefire system.

Yeah, I was just going to dremel a little bit of it off. I had head that if I did this though I would have to re-parkerize the whole barrel? I'm not sure if this is true or not, and I can't find anything on google. 

 

When I bought my shotgun last month I was surprised to find that 100rd value pack of birdshot was cheaper and easier to find than 9mm FMJ! I would have never thought my first long gun would have cheaper ammo than my handgun. Haha pretty lucky especially considering today's ammunition status....

 

As far as trying the nebo light, i'm sure many people have had success with light mounts and lights that are off of the forend. For me, it wasn't an option I was willing to spend good money to try, since I have short thumbs and was worried I wouldn't be able to actuate the pressure tail cap. But you may have better luck than I!

I believe you are correct about the parkerizing. I believe it's more like a coating on the steel whereas blueing is in the steel.

Thanks! I much prefer keeping this simple because it's already a heavy gun and I don't have much real use for a bunch of rails and lasers, etc.
