Question about superstitions

Recommended Posts

I received permission from a developer to run a metal detector over their property before it is is plowed up . Found a lot of metal in the ground like plow parts and stuff but up near the 1920s era home, i found something odd. Burried about a foot down about 30 yards from the front door i found what i think was a pewter dinner plate. Are there any superstitions or goodluck deals that anyone can think of as to why you burry a plate in the front yard?

In the African-American slave
community, slaves quickly familiarized themselves with funeral
procedures and the location of gravesites of family and friends.
Specific slaves were assigned to prepare dead bodies, build coffins, dig
graves, and construct headstones. Slave funerals were typically at
night when the workday was over, with the master present to view all the
ceremonial procedures. Slaves from nearby plantations were regularly in
attendance.

At death, a slave’s body was wrapped in cloth. The hands were placed
across the chest, and a metal plate was placed on top of their hands.
The reasoning for the plate was to hinder their return home by
suppressing any spirits in the coffin.

Most likely it just ended up there somehow, rather than intentionally put there.   You find all kinds of strange things.  People back then also did not have trash service and would bury or make a pile someplace not too far from the house, anything else nearby?   I have never been able to make "sense" of the stuff on our family property --- you would find nearly intact (but now very rusty), usable stuff (usually a tool of some sort) buried anywhere and everywhere, like it was just dropped and left there one day.

In the tornados that hit most recently we lost most of our big trees and one of em fell over to reveal a trash heap, which was now a treasure trove of intact antique bottles.

The above is a thought, any bones under it?

No. Bones, the plate was between a couple of very old trees. Have found a load of metal junk so far. Heading back out tomorrow. 70 acres of land, lots to check out. Thanks guys

If your sure its pewter I would be willing to part with a couple bucks and relieve you of that burden.

Well that is where i am a slight bit peaved. I found it with a friend of mine and as we were on earthing it, he took a shovel and tried to pry it up instead of digging around it. He broke it into 3 solid pieces. I have all 3 pieces but i wish it was all intact. I will take a picture and post it

You should smack him in the head for doing something so dumb. If it was really pewter, that's a shame.

superstitions are what you make of them.  Some people believe, other don't.  As a kid, I did but I grew out of it going camping.

I picked a camping spot during spring break one year and we spent a couple nights there.

After we got back Dad told us about a Shoot out that had occurred there at  church their maybe 80 years before and allot of people believed that area to be haunted.  We never noticed anything.  At the time it was odd hearing about it after we spent a couple night there.  (the church was long since gone)  No houses in that area any more either.
