I could debate that the build quality of a good AK is nothing to underestimate, but ARs are, by design, built better. Good luck with your EBR.

Get the AK the parts kits are getting higher so they are going up in price. Everybody and their mother are making ARs. If the world comes to an end you will be able to get a AR quick.

Good to finally meet you, Brad, and glad to help out, even though I didn't do much more than show you the things that people had already told you about, so I can't take credit for much. Glad you sorted it all out though, it will be interesting to see what you decide to build!

if it were me, it would be an m1a, or a SA-58. it's heavier but the range and accuracy are well worth it!

after that it would be an AR platform simply because they're more accurate and I know that platform.

remember the adage? speed is fine but accuracy is final... as for penetration, unless you're shooting at an apc, a steel core .223 would do a handsome job on pretty much what ever comes your way.

I've got several Saigas in .308. They may not be in the BOB, but at least one of them is packed and ready to go, with ammo, at all times. Promise. :bowrofl:

The only problem is magazines. Hi-Caps for the S-308 are just hard to find, and expensive as heck when you do. Shooting that little carbine, though, is a grin maker. Much more fun than any FAL, CETME, etc., that I've ever shot. I can keep 2 MOA with steel-cased Russian ball at seventy yards easily. I know it's not Camp Perry, but I just don't see me doing much sniping in a SHTF scenario.

Let me see if I can find that old vid from the DoD where they tested several common main battle rifle calibers against various forms of cover. Against a building's red brick veneer at fifty yards, the .223 couldn't compete with 7.62x39.

And, please, don't anyone misunderstand me. You can create many scenarios and consider many variables in choosing your "one" rifle. It's a toss up in the end. You can't predict the future. For me, though, a simple, dead reliable AK-pattern with which I'm fairly accurate is what makes me feel most prepared. Lots of people feel differently, and I'm sure they're not made vulnerable by their decisions.

Indeed. This, for me, is my first AWB rifle and one that I need to get NOW. I'll probably also get something in .308 - the 7.62 is a good round but the .223/.308 combo pretty much covers all you bases...

So I figured i might as well jump in with both feet, so I just ordered 1k rnds of .556 as well as 10 Magpul 30 rnd PMAGs. Now I need to find someone locally selling good lowers so I can get started in earnest.

Anyone selling lowers in the Memphis area?

Heh. Probably could have saved some money with the group buy.

Possibly (had I been paying attention) - these are $14 each shipped. What's the price on the group buy?

Dunno yet... he's contacting MagPul to see what he can swing on some of their items. Should know in a few days, probably. I'm looking at picking up 10-20 as well... but since they're not scarce, I'm holding out to see what he can swing.

Yah, well, if they come in significantly cheaper, I'll buy some of those, too!

Mags will be one of those things that get scarce if things go south in the elections...

Yep. That's why I'm stocking up on PMag 30rd'ers each paycheck, after I finish this AR build (should be done with everything, other than optics, by the middle/end of this month).

Here's the vid. I saw this one a couple of years ago and it took a while to find it again. I d/l'd it so I can watch it whenever.
