Well it's confirmed to be an 1890 Police made in 1892 base on the serial number so I'm happy about that.

It's 44-40 like all 1890s.

I'm still tracking down the story of the original owner through family so I pass that on for those who like a little history.

That makes it a quite rare and valuable piece. I'd clean it to the point rust won't be eating it any further, and wax it with Renniasance wax. Be careful and patient using a correct sized gunsmith's screwdriver disassembling and reassembling it. Thanks for sharing it with us. I like the old stuff!
