How Long Have You Had Your TN Handgun Carry Permit

I received my noticed in the mail a few weeks ago, that it is time to renew, now we are cooking with peanut oil.  This will be my 4th renewal.  I was fortunate to be in the first initial wave back in October 1996.  I recall taking my class, shooting range and completing the paperwork, and then waiting what felt like an eternity (close to 6 months) before getting my plastic card with my picture.  So I guess the issue date of the actual card is when the clock begins ticking, so I recall renewing in 2001, 2005, 2009, and now 2013.

This got me thinking, I will have had my now for 16 years this April, how long have you had a Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit?

I can't remember the exact day or year, but I got my permit when the legendary Jack Owens was Sheriff of Shelby County. They were yellow cards like the deputies I.D cards. Owens had so much clout that many officers would become nice to you after they saw your permit.

Something I wondered about the data base that the CA publishes. A year or so ago the site showed that I had only been a permit holder since 2008 and lately it doesn't pull up my name at all. Is 2008 the year that the state took over issuing permits?

I'm up for renewal this year..........  Aug. '97 was my first installment for this priviledge.

I was looking thru some old records the other day, and now I can't find it again. But I believe it was August, 1998. I remember it was hot as the devil's playground at Symrna when we did shoot qualifications.

So I guess about 14 years.

Man hard to remember. I'm thinking since '95 or '96, possibly earlier. I remember wanting one as soon as I turned 21 but we were young and broke. The money for the class just wasn't in our budget. We finally got them a year or two later. Now we're middle aged and broke. =)

P.S.

If I remember correctly, a little before that time you were required to get a bond for maybe $50,000 or something in order to get a permit.
